Muriel's obituary
Muriel Thornton-Boone, affectionately known as "Buck" or "Plunkum," 94, of Mahwah, NJ, passed away peacefully on July 09, 2023. Muriel was born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Mahwah, a town she loved and never left.
She was an entrepreneur and a savvy businesswoman respected throughout her community. She followed in the entrepreneurial footsteps of her parents, who, in the early 1900s, ran a grocery store, boarding house, and barbershop.
At age 24, her grandfather encouraged her to begin a career in real estate, which she remained for over 70 years. During this time, she opened "The Fountain of Beauty" in Nyack, New York, alongside her sisters Shirlee and Genero, which served as a beauty salon and a meeting place for the local African-American community.
In her later years, she received her mortuary science degree from the Simmons Institute of Funeral Services in Syracuse, New York. Even in her 80s, she continued to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams, opening many shops on her Burd Street property in Nyack, New York.
Throughout her life, she was a surrogate mother to many people from all walks of life, mentoring and guiding those in need. She had a nurturing spirit where she would feed, protect and encourage everyone she connected with. She had a close relationship with her nieces and nephews and made every effort to stay in communication over the years.
Muriel will be dearly missed and always remembered. Muriel was the last surviving of the eight Boone siblings. A legacy of Boones survives her. A celebration of life will be held in her honor as opposed to traditional funeral services. The family will have an intimate gathering celebrating her beautiful life at a private location.
On behalf of the Boone family, we appreciate the love and support and ask you to keep Muriel in your thoughts and memories.
