Mother, Mrs. Annora's obituary
Mrs. Annora Ross King-Lawson—affectionately known as Mother Lawson, Aunt Sue, and Susie—was born on March 21, 1923, in Louisville, Kentucky, and raised in Indianapolis as the second oldest of eight children. She is survived by her sister Mrs. Mary Ross-Moore. She became the spiritual and emotional anchor of the Ross family. She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School and later completed wartime medical training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, serving as a nurse’s assistant during World War II.
She moved to Los Angeles in 1963 and served faithfully at Bethany Apostolic Church in the Women’s Auxiliary, Nurses Guild, Kitchen Ministry, and Family Ministries. She later became a Charter Member of Word of Life Outreach Ministries under Pastor Jeryl Ross and Love and Grace Christian Fellowship Church under Pastor David Cowan Sr.
She earned her beloved nicknames by becoming a surrogate aunt, mother, grandmother, counselor, and confidant to many. She lived by the principle: “There’s no job too small for the Lord, and no job too small for family.”
She was the proud mother of Mrs. Jacquelyn King‑Gatson and Mr. William Edward King II (known to many as Beaver). She was the grandmother of Stephanie King, Andrea King, and Chasity Gatson; and great‑grandmother of Avery Warren, Adonis Warren, Amari Berry, and Chase Moore. Yet her maternal reach extended far beyond biological ties. She served as a surrogate mother, grandmother, aunt, counselor, and confidant to countless relatives, friends, and church members.
A devoted American, she exercised her civic duty faithfully from the 1960s through her final election. She voted proudly for President Barack Obama in both elections and lived to witness the election of President Joseph R. Biden and Vice President Kamala D. Harris—the first Black woman to hold the office.
She passed away peacefully at 102 years old, leaving behind a legacy of faith, devotion, dignity, and generational strength.
