Morris's obituary
Morris Berman, 92, of Scranton passed away Tuesday morning at the Jewish Home of NEPA. Born September 2, 1913 in Russia, the son of the late Samuel and Sarah Berman, he was a graduate of Scranton Tech H.S. Class of 1931. He was a veteran of the United States Army having proudly served during World War 11 as a Private First Class where he was deployed to Europe, fought in Normandy, and received an honorable discharge. (Morris is listed in the WW2 National Registry of Remembrance.). He received the World War 11 Victory Medal and the EAME ribbon.
Morris was a member of the Ahovath Shalom Congregation in the Providence section of Scranton and Ohav Zedek Congregation, Mulberry Street, Scranton, Pa. He was employed by David Harris & Sons Co., Elson & Co., and M. D. Brown as a salesman for men's shirts and outerwear. His work ethic, attention to detail, and personal connection to customers were the recipe to his business success. He belonged to the Odd Fellows Israel Lodge, the Jewish Home, Jewish War Veterans, Hill Neighborhood Assoc., a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Jewish Community Center where he was an avid swimmer.
The "Special Service Award" was presented to Morris for dedicated volunteer service to the Jewish Home of NEPA on April 26, 1990.
Morris was very active in local politics and held the elected office of Republican committeeman for many years. He was presented with a Republican Service Award by Commissioners Luger and Pettinatto in 1983 and hosted many fundraisers at his home.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred (2004), brother Bernard, and sister Leah. He is survived by his devoted son Charles Bernard Berman (Bonita Lea Timins), cousins (Louis Marcus and Atty. Alex Marcus) and their families whom he loved with all of his heart.
A graveside funeral service was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Dalton Jewish Cemetery in the Providence/ Linden St. section by Rabbi Samuel Sandhaus. Arrangements are made by Carlucci, Golden, and DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., Dunmore, PA. Contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
Shiva was observed at home at 417 N. Webster Ave., Scranton.
Morris Berman's name is inscribed on the Jewish War Veterans Wall of Honor at the Jewish Community Center, Jefferson Ave., Scranton, Pa. A plaque engraved with his portrait, military medals, and rank is installed at the Archbald Veterans Memorial Park, Archbald, Pa.
