Morgan's obituary
Morgan "Moe" Buerkett, 19, of Champaign, died Sunday morning, July 24, 2011, in Rantoul.
A private memorial service will be conducted.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, at The High School of Saint Thomas More, Champaign.
Morgan Memorial Home, Savoy, is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Buerkett was born April 22, 1992, a daughter of Jon and Dana (Ehler) Buerkett.
She was joined in death by her father, Jon, and her mother, Dana.
She is survived by her sister, Ashley Buerkett of Chicago, as well as her grandparents, Betty Charlene (Jack) Hathaway of Champaign, and Vernon and Kay Ehler of Rantoul; three uncles; an aunt; and numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, James Anthony Buerkett.
Miss Buerkett attended Holy Cross Grade School, where she was a talented athlete. At The High School of Saint Thomas More in Champaign, she helped lead both the volleyball and track teams to the IHSA state finals. She was an exemplary student as well, achieving a place on the school's honor roll, serving as an STM Ambassador, participating in both the Saber Pack and on the cheerleading squad, serving as a mentor and participating in the Spanish Club. She graduated in 2010.
She also enjoyed horseback riding, including English-style riding.
She was heavily recruited to play college volleyball and settled on the academically challenging University of Chicago, where she was about to begin her sophomore year. A talented middle blocker, she was a rising star on the UC volleyball team and a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was studying journalism.
She loved the feeling of breaking in a new pair of tennis shoes and enjoyed watching old movies, especially "The Birds" and "Singin' in the Rain."
A scholarship fund has been established in Miss Buerkett's memory at The High School of Saint Thomas More, 3901 N. Mattis Ave., Champaign, IL 61822.
