Monica's obituary
Monica Green, age 81, passed away suddenly at her home in St. Louis, Missouri on December 1, 2025. Her last hours were vibrant, spent joyfully sharing a meal with loved ones.
Monica was born on November 16, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York. After attending Flushing High School, she went on to study at New York University, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. Her work eventually brought her to St. Louis, where, as they say, the rest is history.
Monica was a loyal and beloved stepmom, stepmom-in-law, adoring cat mom, and cherished friend of many. Though she was a proud native of New York City (and would have you know it), Monica was a passionate public servant and advocate for her adopted hometown of St. Louis, dedicating over 28 years of her professional life to human resources management for the City of St. Louis and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
Monica lived a life defined by uncompromising integrity, an unforgettable spirit, and a heart that loved fiercely. To know her was to appreciate a unique blend of her signature feisty resilience and extraordinary kindness. She was a force of nature who said and did what she believed was right, a straight-shooter who always gave an honest opinion. She was affectionately known for her candor, her spirited personality, and her quick, disarming wit.
Classy and effortlessly cosmopolitan, Monica lived a life rich with stories and passions. She was an avid world traveler with a keen appreciation for art, history, food, and culture, and she never met a cruise she didn't like. She found immense joy in caring for her cats, Pepper and Trixie, as well as the pets of those she loved. Monica also enjoyed preparing and sharing fabulous gourmet food, especially dishes based on recipes from her Mother, like butter beef and her famous jambalaya. An artist in her earlier years, Monica had impeccable taste that came through in everything she touched. Alongside her sophisticated style, Monica always exuded a certain gracious ease and down-to-earth demeanor, and the truest measure of her character could be found in her uncanny ability to connect with just about anyone. She was always ready with a helping hand, a listening ear, and the wisdom of an empathetic heart.
Monica was preceded in death by her mother Lillian Rosenstein, father Bernard Green, as well as her dear friends Carol Maune, Thomas Muellerleile, and Betty Hellige. She is survived by her stepdaughter Chelsie Hellige, stepson-in-law Ekkachai Danwanichakul, dear friends Pete Mutter and Gregory Abrams, and close friend and colleague Brenda Haverly.
Monica's legacy of love, toughness, humor, and kindness will forever be treasured by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed, and we will always fondly remember the impact her life had on us, and so many others. As she might say, "I don’t know what else to tell you, kid."
Please join us for a Celebration of Life and cocktail-style luncheon at a.casa (3723 S. Kingshighway Blvd., 63109) on Sunday, January 4, 2026 from 12 p.m.–3 p.m. We'll clink glasses and share our favorite memories of our beloved "NYC gal."
