My Grandma Millie has always been my role model. She could do, and did everything she set her mind to. She is without a doubt, one of the strongest women I know. My Grandma taught me to be creative, work hard, and always appreciate family time.
As a kid, we used to go to the FICRA Fair on Fox Island every summer. We would spend the weekend running back and forth from her house and the community center, exploring all the booths, playing in the park, and trying our hardest to win a goldfish to take home. As we got older, those weekends turned into us helping with the Fair and even having our own booth with her where we sold everything from dried lavender, to garden decor that reminded me of creating little fairy gardens in my Grandma’s backyard.
She taught the power of writing and education. She would give her grandchildren journals to fill with our summer memories and moments every year. It became part of our weekly routine, like Sunday morning breakfast, where we would all come together and quietly sit, journaling about our week. To this day, I have those journals, and I am so grateful to have the chance to re-read all my entries and moments. It’s a living piece of my childhood, and her. And to this day, I keep a journal.
Every year on my birthday, she would take me to lunch and a shopping trip. She spent the whole day asking me about my life and what I wanted to be when I grew up as we went around town to my favorite shops and stores. And like all good teachers, she took this moment to teach me about the importance of money and how to keep a checkbook…something any kid would find annoying in the moment but is one of the most important skills I have today.
I have so many memories of her. These sweet memories have become my most precious experiences and will forever be a part of me. So many things in my everyday life remind me of her…. I miss you so much, Grandma. I think about you every day and everywhere I look. I love you and can’t wait to see you again.
