Mike's obituary

Mike R. Morgan, age 77 of Yuma, AZ, passed away Tuesday morning, June 25, 2024. Mike was born on November 03, 1946, in Yuma, son of the late Caleb "Kay" and Mary Etta (Stotts) Morgan. He served in the United States Army for two years during the Vietnam War and was a helicopter mechanic until his Honorable Discharge in 1970. He married Roberta Cheryl Kuhn shortly after returning home to Yuma on 09 September 1970 after a whirlwind, 3 month long courtship. He met Roberta while working for Grey Beverage Distributing Company (Yuma, AZ) as a beer delivery driver. Roberta was a grocery clerk at Air Base Grocery. Roberta took a position as the secretary at Grey Beverage shortly after they got married and they worked together there until Mike was hired as a Fireman for the City of Yuma in 1973. He retired from the City of Yuma Fire Department as a Captain in 1998. Mike and Roberta made many friendships during the years at the Fire Department and these friends became like family. He was lovingly known as “Captain Chunk.” To this day, if you mention “Captain Chunk” at the Fire Department, even the guys who had never served with him have heard Captain Chunk stories passed down through the years. Mike was immensely proud of being a Fireman…even after retiring, he would always introduce himself as “Mike Morgan, retired Fireman”. While working at the Fire Department and after retirement, he worked at Roadway Trucking until he fully retired at the age of 65. He enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing and was a lifetime member of the Yuma Rod & Gun Club. He instilled and nurtured the love of fishing, hunting, and camping in his children. There isn’t a shortage of hunting, fishing, and camping stories throughout the years with family and friends. Mike was a carport mechanic for all his friends and family. It was a rare occasion that he wasn’t elbows deep fixing an engine for his friends and family along with working on his own vehicles. In his free time, Mike was an avid pool player and enjoyed playing in pool tournaments around town and was always willing to pass on his skills to others and teach them how to play. Family and friends meant everything to him…he was a loving and loyal husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend. There are many well known people throughout the Yuma community…Mike Morgan was one of them…he was a legend in his own time and the stories and shared memories will continue on even though he is no longer on this earth with us.

Survivors include his wife: Roberta (Kuhn) Morgan; his two children: Billy Morgan (Yuma, AZ) and Michelle Morgan-Ybarra (Yuma, AZ); brother and step-sister: Tommy Morgan (Yuma, AZ) and Jeane Fletcher (Yuma, AZ). He was preceded in death by his parents: Caleb and Mary Morgan; step-mother: Lennie Morgan (Caleb); sister-in-law: Shayne Morgan (Tommy); son-in-law: Raymond Ybarra (Michelle).

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am at Christ Lutheran Church (2555 S. Engler Ave – Yuma) on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Pastor Harmon will officiate with Fire Department and Military Honors to follow. A luncheon will be held right after the service at the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Hall (954 S. 13th Ave) at 11:30 am – 5:30 pm.
