Mike's obituary

Mike Banas sadly passed away in his Los Angeles home after losing a two year battle with cancer on February 23rd, 2022, at the age of 53. He is survived by his wife Jennifer Johnson, father Henry Banas, older brother Kevin Banas and his wife Colette Banas, older brother Pete Banas, and older sister Kim Petruska and her husband Jerry Petruska, as well as his neices and nephews Ciara Banas, Aoife Banas, Eoin Banas, Jordan Petruska, Josh Petruska, and Josie Petruska.

Mike was a talented member of both the Canadian Cinema Editors, and then the American Cinema Editors after his 2015 move to L.A. from Vancouver. Starting out in school in Montreal, Mike moved to Vancouver in the 90s to start his longstanding career in film and television, carving a name for himself in the industry working on shows such as Dead Like Me, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, with later projects including The L.A. Complex, The Legend of Barney Thompson, and Blindspot. He was known for his passion for his work, attention to detail, and range shown through his ability to work on a variety of different genres and project types.

Alongside his professional history, he boasted an equally impressive personal one; from his days as a teen living with several other young punks in a shared apartment in Toronto, to his adventures in China working on a kung-fu mini series, Mike always had an entertaining tale to tell. Wherever he went he touched people's hearts, and created lasting friendships akin to family. His legacy is carried on in the lives of those he affected with his kindness, generosity, and humour. He is and always will be deeply loved by friends and family alike, and will be sorely missed by all.

Celebrations of life will be held in Mike's honour in the 4 cities he spent his life in: Toronto April 23rd, Montreal TBD, Vancouver TBD, and Los Angeles March 26th, arranged by various family members and friends in each city.
