Mika's obituary

Dear Friends and Family,

Thank you for being here to honor our sister, Mika Lana Wilson McMillan. Instead of a traditional obituary, we’ve chosen to write this letter to you—the people she loved and who loved her back—because that’s exactly the kind of person Mika was. She would’ve wanted this to feel personal, heartfelt, and full of love.

Mika was born in Tokyo in 1964, the eldest of the three Wilson children. She was our shining light, the thread that held us together no matter the distance or challenges we faced. Her warmth and kindness opened her heart to everyone she met. Mika had a rare gift for making you feel like the most important person in the world, whether you were family, a close friend, or someone she just met.

Faith was the cornerstone of Mika’s life. Through her church communities in Vacaville and Concord, she created new families who loved and supported her just as she loved and supported them. She was deeply devoted to her husband, Frank McMillan, for nearly 25 years, and she embraced his mother, Domenica (Lena) Morrison, as her own. Though living with in-laws is not always easy, Mika often expressed her gratitude for the life they built together.

Everything changed on November 16, 2024. Mika, who had been working toward recovery and looking forward to transitioning to skilled nursing, experienced a horrific act of violence at the hands of her husband, Frank.

In the following weeks, Mika—who we lovingly called Mika-chan because she was so adorably sweet—showed incredible strength and grace, even in the face of unimaginable trauma. But her spirits darkened as the reality was that the person she trusted most in the world was the one who did her harm. Her mood worsened even more after learning that Frank had confessed to killing Lena. Despite her body’s valiant fight against complications like pneumonia and sepsis, the emotional and physical toll was too much. Mika passed away on December 20, 2024, leaving a legacy of resilience, love, and faith.

Her strength in the face of these struggles taught us what true courage looks like. Even in her most challenging moments, she thought of others—praying for them, loving them, and inspiring them with her unshakable spirit. Her laugh was infectious, her smile unforgettable, and her kindness limitless.

To those of you who visited, sent messages, or held Mika in your prayers during her final months, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love and support reminded Mika of her profound impact on so many lives.

Mika leaves behind a legacy of love for her family, church, friends, and all those lucky enough to call her a sister, auntie (Karinda and Hasana Elliott and others), or confidante. She is survived by her siblings, Takashi and Yumi; her nieces and nephews, Eric, Kimo, Meghan, and Courtney; her aunt, Soon Wilson; cousin Christina; and her cherished grandnieces and nephews. Mika also leaves behind her chosen family, whose love and loyalty she treasured.

Among those who have passed: Her father, Napoleon Wilson Jr., in 2015; Fumiko Takada Wilson, in 1991; Uncle Kenneth Wilson; and other aunts and relatives in Detroit, West Virginia, to name a few.

We invite you to celebrate Mika’s life on Saturday, February 15, at Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo (where Lena is buried). Details will be shared on this site. Instead of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to a domestic violence or mental health organization in Mika’s honor. She spent her life helping others, and we want to carry that legacy forward.

Mika’s life was a testament to faith, love, and resilience. She will forever be our North Star, guiding us with her wisdom, humor, and belief in the goodness of people. She taught us and many others what it means to love unconditionally and without judgment.

Thank you for loving our sister and for helping keep her spirit alive. We hope to see you at her service to share stories, laughter, and tears as we celebrate the extraordinary woman Mika was.

With love,

Takashi (Tom) and Yumi Wilson
