He was born in St. Louis, Mo. on St. Patrick’s Day March 17th, 1985. At six months old he relocated to DeSoto Texas, following his parents who refused to leave him in the Show Me State. He learned to swim at the age of 3 after falling into the family pool on a cold February day. Mikey was a conversationalist, he would speak to anyone he met, finding mutual interests to discuss. While in DeSoto, he had the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of Dallas, Texas, like the Texas State Fair and Six Flags. As a Tiger Cub in the Boy Scouts, his pack toured the Texas Super Conductor Super Collider while under construction. He took every opportunity to tag along on many adventures with his family, being the youngest of four. Vanessa would say he would always be a baby in her eyes since she once changed his diapers.
In 1992, the family moved to San Antonio. It was a whole new experience for Mikey and his siblings. Mikey loved meeting his extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and all the family fiestas and parties. He attended Leon Springs Elementary, Stinson Middle School and graduated from Clark High School. He then headed to College Station for a stint as a Fighting Texas Aggie at Texas A&M, eventually finishing as a Roadrunner at UTSA.
While in elementary school, he excelled in his classes. He was extremely confident in his art skills as demonstrated when one evening he quickly sketched the solar system, held it up and proclaimed, “This will surely win 1st prize!” As it turns out the PTA was sponsoring a drawing contest and as unexpected as it was (except for Mikey), his sketch won 1st place. Mikey participated in a week of golf lessons and appeared to be a natural, had a beautiful swing and follow thru, unfortunately most of the time he would miss the ball, but it was a beautiful swing. Mikey joined the Boy Scouts and participated in monthly weekend camping as well as week-long summer camps. He loved being outdoors. He became a swimmer and competed in club swim meets each summer.
While in high school Mikey was a member of the swim team and water polo team. With all the workouts, he and his teammates started to fill out and tone up. His Mom asked him what he would do if a big football player tried to pick a fight with him. He quickly said he would run - Mikey was never a fighter! He and his three fellow senior team members attended a water polo camp at Pepperdine University in Malibu California. Through swim, in his freshman year he met his best friend, Evan. They had the same sense of humor and developed a lifelong brotherly love for one another. That love extended to Evan's wife Cristina and their children. He was the first person to see Liliana, their first born, beating all the grandparents as he rushed to see the new baby.
Spending time listening to his grandfather, Emilio, playing guitar, Mikey started learning how to play from him. He took lessons and learned to play his 1st song, “3AM” by Matchbox Twenty. Good Riddance (Time of your life) by Green Day was his 2nd song which he performed for the closing night of Boy Scout summer camp where he was a volunteer JR Counselor for 4 weeks in a row. He loved playing and singing which led him to take private singing lessons and join a few bands. His senior year at Clark, Mikey's band played in the Talent Show. They performed “Corazon Espinado” by Santana sung by Mikey as well as a heavy metal song. As a result, Mikey got voted the “Best Male Singer” by the senior class! Mikey loved and appreciated all kinds of music. While at Texas A&M, he became a member of Anillos de Oro (gold rings), a mariachi band and performed at various events and venues. Mikey’s love of guitars grew to where he had several - acoustical, electric, classical and other variations. He became acquainted with the ukulele and fell in love with it. We loved hearing him play “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole. He participated as a school mentor and would take his ukulele with him to perform for the kids.
Even though Mikey loved his music, it was his love of dancing that was most exhilarating. He mastered East Coast Swing dancing and even gave lessons. He was amazing to watch. He served as President of the San Antonio Swing Club Association for a couple of years. He also loved blues dancing, salsa and hip hop, but was willing to try just about anything.
Mikey was a doer! He would get interested in a subject and put all his effort into it. He tried Standup Comedy and did several open mike nights at comedy clubs. He got into Vine and joined a network of people involved with making these short 6-second videos. Ultimately, he went to New York and Boston to attend a Vine convention/gathering. He traveled with a fellow Viner whom he met online. His siblings were terrified that he was traveling with a stranger. Meanwhile, the other Viner had the same anxiety about Mikey. In the end it worked out and they had a terrific adventure.
After 6 semesters at Texas A&M, Mikey returned home and earned an Associate Degree in Information Technology. Finding it difficult to find a Programmer/Developers position, he went on to complete his undergraduate degree at UTSA. He earned a summer internship at USAA which helped him focus on his final year in college. Upon graduation, he was hired at USAA where he was involved with several volunteer organizations to mentor students as well as new interns and hires and where he met his future wife.
Mikey had a caring nature demonstrated when he nursed his sister Allegra as she recovered from surgery. He would make sure that she had her meds on schedule as well as her food available which was key as she had her jaw wired shut. His brother recalls how Mikey jumped on his back during a college intramural football game when a fight broke out. He asked Mikey why he did that and his reply was so that no one would hit him from behind. As our family started growing, Mikey was always present at the birth of his nephews and nieces. He enjoyed entertaining them with his singing and dancing. Mikey loved his family fiercely and that love was reciprocated to our beloved son and baby brother. He was a bright light in our lives, loved and cherished forever. May he find eternal peace in God’s arms.
Mikey and Jennifer met during a work trip to close out a shared project between their teams. Mikey was immediately smitten, but Jennifer initially missed all his signals. She didn’t even realize their first date to go dancing, at what would become their go-to date spot, Luna, was a ‘real’ date until part way through. She knew how he felt about her by the way he danced with her. Their connection and love for each other developed quickly, and they spent as much time together as they could while juggling Jennifer’s upcoming dissertation defense and three daughters. The girls quickly figured out that their mother’s new ‘friend’, Mikey, was actually much more, and welcomed him into their family unit. He asked their blessing before proposing to Jennifer on a family vacation in July 2017, and they were so excited he had to tell them not to scream and give the secret away. Mikey and Jennifer were married on August 4, 2018, with a celebration that was just about perfect, including sharing many dances to live music played by their favorite band from that first date.
Mikey was an incredible husband and dad, doting on Jennifer and the girls and always willing to take on even the most mundane and unpleasant tasks to make life easier for everyone else. He brought so much laughter to the family with his terrible math-related jokes, hit-or-miss impressions, and random acts of weirdness. Some of our happiest memories include two camping trips, game nights, deep conversation around the fire in the backyard fire pit he built us, water balloon fights, working in our gardens, 80’s movie marathons, numerous sing-alongs as he played guitar or ukulele, hikes and fossil hunting, trips to the beach, delicious home-cooked breakfasts, impromptu dance parties, math and science tutoring (and a lot of virtual learning tech support) for the girls, and the rare Texas snowpocalypse event in February 2021 where we got to experience the joys and challenges of real winter weather as a family. Mikey loved us hard, showing us that love in big and small ways every day. There will always be an empty space in our family where he should be, but we know he would want us to move forward and continue to do all the things we had planned to do together. We’ll do our best to honor his memory and make him proud. We already miss seeing his big smile, hearing his infectious laugh, and being wrapped in his long, tight hugs. He fought so hard to stay with all of us, and in losing his fight, we lost a beloved husband, dad, son, brother, and friend. We miss him so much, but we are glad he is finally at peace.
A private graveside service will be held in the coming days for immediate family, to be followed by a larger celebration of life event to be held once Covid risks decrease in the community. Details about the celebration of life event will be posted here as they are available, and we welcome all who wish to attend. We know Mikey touched many lives, so please also leave stories, pictures, and any other memories you would like to share.
