Miguel's obituary
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Miguel Lopez Jr., who many fondly knew as “Mike”. He is remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and community member. His loss is felt deeply by all who were fortunate to know him. He was born on September 27th, 1958, to Miguel Lopez Sr. and Gladys Maldonado, and was raised in the Bronx. He departed us on March 24th, 2026, and is survived by 6 children and 3 grandchildren.
A man of resilience, Miguel’s tenacity and dedication were tangible, not only in his inspiring, unrivaled work ethic, but also in his personal relationships. Often described as hardworking and stubbornly loyal, his commitment and loving nature permeated everything he did. The wisdom that he offered to others was simple yet powerful: “Work hard and then work harder.” And, work he did, spending countless hours on special projects in his role as supervisor with the New York City Department of Transportation and for Autorama Enterprises Towing. He was a first responder on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. In 2014, he led his crew to clear the highway to help land a falling plane on the Major Deegan. His team and crew were recognized for this life-saving feat by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office and an appearance on the Good Day New York show with Rosanna Scotto. Even before his work for New York City, he served the country in the Army National Guard for six years, leaving honorably to return home to help a sick family member.
More than his awards and accolades, the relationships he forged with his friends and family were what he valued most in life. He demonstrated great love and care for his six children, whom he would do anything for, no questions asked. Miguel’s love for family knew no bloodline boundaries, as he grew to call many of his close friends family.
Miguel’s legacy extends beyond his familial ties and work life. His kindness and generosity touched the hearts of everyone he encountered, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. The void left by his passing is immense. The way he selflessly gave everything he could for the ones he cared for will always be remembered and cherished. The sound of his booming and resounding voice, his playful laughter, and the image of his wide, gold-toothed smile will live on through those he leaves behind. He will be forever missed by his children, his family, and the many friends he made along the way.
We find comfort, however, in the knowledge that his kind spirit will live on in those who were lucky to cross paths with him. In remembrance of Miguel, a fund has been established to provide a farewell worthy of the passionate and generous man he was. Let us honor his memory by fulfilling his funeral and burial wishes as a way of giving back the love, kindness, and generosity he imparted to us all.
