Michele Picek Shanks
April 28, 1953 – February 22, 2025
Michele Picek Shanks, 71, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, at Integris Hospice House, surrounded by her loving family. She was born and raised in Lawton, Oklahoma, where she attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from Lawton High School.
Michele dedicated her career to civil service at Fort Sill Army Base, working in MEPRS until her retirement. Her remarkable contributions to the Army's accounting department earned her national recognition, culminating in a trip to the Pentagon, where she was honored with the Department of the Army Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service, the Army’s highest civilian award, and an honorary college Accounting degree. Her work not only streamlined critical systems but left a lasting impact on military operations.
On November 9, 1979, Michele married the love of her life, Allen Shanks. Together, they built a life rich with laughter, adventure, and enduring friendships. They enjoyed playing dominoes with friends, classic rock, ski trips to New Mexico, and weekends at Lake Lawtonka—fishing, laughing, and soaking in the beauty of life together.
Michele is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Allen Shanks; their children, Nicole Hudson (Tom) and Christian Shanks (Bri); her brothers, Nick Picek (Paula) and Robert "Bob" Picek (Julie); her grandchildren, Austin (Whitney), Zachery, Colton (Stormy), Jeremiah, and Sarah; her great-grandchildren, Bryson, River, Messiah, and Ares; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
Michele cherished the special moments she spent with her grandchildren throughout their childhood years. From summer days at Lake Lawtonka to holiday gatherings filled with laughter, she created a lifetime of memories they will carry in their hearts forever. Her love was a constant, guiding light in their lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Teresa and Henry George Picek; her siblings, Wade, Teci, and Joe.
Michele will be remembered for her sharp mind, compassionate heart, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and the love she gave so freely.
