Michael's obituary
Michael John Wynn of Calabash, North Carolina, passed away on February 24, 2025, at the age of 62.
Born and raised in Inwood on Long Island, New York, Michael grew up in a loving, close-knit family alongside his parents and eight siblings. His childhood was filled with fond memories of playing baseball with neighborhood friends, camping trips upstate, and endless summer days at the beach.
After graduating from Buffalo State University in 1984 with a degree in Criminal Justice, Michael went on to have an eclectic career, spanning seafood distribution, pest control, banking, and telecom tech support. At every stop, he built lasting friendships with his colleagues, and will be remembered for the joy and camaraderie he brought to the workplace.
In 1992, Michael married the love of his life, Maureen, and together they built a beautiful life in Rochester, New York. Here they raised two sons, Tyler and Kevin, who were Michael’s greatest sources of pride. In recent months, Michael fulfilled a lifelong dream of retiring and moving to the beach, settling in Calabash, North Carolina.
Michael was a man of kindness, wit, and warmth. He had a true gift for making people smile, whether through his clever humor, his captivating storytelling, or his genuine ability to connect with others. He never missed an opportunity to brighten someone’s day with a well-timed joke, by lending a helping hand, or simply by making those around him feel seen and valued.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—playing guitar, taking walks with his dogs, kayaking, watching British crime dramas, enjoying a bowl of ice cream, and most of all, spending time with his family. A natural handyman and problem-solver, Michael took great pride in DIY projects, building guitars in his spare time and taking on countless home improvements over the years. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of his all-time favorite band, The Beatles, able to recall every lyric or share the inspiration behind any song. Michael loved sports and was an avid New York Mets and Buffalo Bills fan. He will be remembered for his mantra “Choose Happy” which he lived and breathed by every day. His gentle spirit, love, and laughter will be deeply missed but forever cherished by all who knew him.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Maureen; his sons Tyler (Kristyna) and Kevin; his siblings George (Robin) Wynn, Colleen (Paul) Zydor, Pat (John) Perrino, Joanne (Nathan) Ritondo, Jane (Steven) Magliaro, Hope (Anthony) Mauro, Timmy (Tina) Wynn, and Margaret (the late Butch) Borfitz; his in-laws Belinda (Robert Clark) Suntop and Cheryl Suntop; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Michael’s family will be honoring his life with a celebration this summer in Rochester, New York. Details and RSVP information will be shared on this site as they become available.
