Mike spent the summer with his Grandparents, Sam and Bertie Welch and me, his uncle Donald Joe Welch. Mike was 2-1/2 and I was 10. My job was to squeeze fresh orange juice for him and keep tabs on him. This, as I look back was not a chore, but fun, since we played with the neighborhood kids right in our own yard. He and his father (my brother) would meet our dad at railroad terminal in Chicago and then dad and Mike by train down to Tennessee. Mike spent several summers with his grandparents. Our relationship was more like brothers, because of our ages. This little runt went on to etch his name in history for his dedication to his country. I miss him terribly and our last conversation at breakfast on June 6, 2021 has put memories in my mind that will never be forgotten.

Hi Candace, Matt, Chris and Andrew,
We are so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We will always remember Mike's smile and willingness to help at scouts. We have so many good memories of time spent with your family through choir and scouting. Peace and love,

I had the privilege of Mike's friendship since the early 70's and what a great opportunity I have had sharing that journey with him. We began the journey as flying Loadmasters and evolved way beyond that into flying and playing a bunch of Fastpitch softball competitively against each other and together as teammates in Charleston S.C. We moved on to Altus AFB and continued the journey involved in training efforts together at the Loadmaster Training School where we worked together as instructors.
I spoke to Mike the day before he left for his grandson's wedding. He was very excited to be able to go and God blessed him with that opportunity before bringing him home. He did, of course, let me know of his excitement for the follow up trip he was going to make to see his beloved Red Sox play on the 18th of this month. Does sound like Mike or what?? As it turned out he was able to have a much better seat than at Fenway. I’m sure he intensely watched that game from a front row seat!!!
We had planned a get together the end of this month after that trip but that was our plan not the Lord's.
I dearly miss my good buddy and his cherished friendship in an earthly way, but I am very glad for him that his physical suffering has been relieved and that he is set free of it.
Really tough to let go, but I am forever thankful to have called him friend and that he referred to me as the same. Till we meet again good buddy God Bless, and I know He has, and to express how much I loved that guy. I pray for all the family in your time of grieving and adjustment and that you would remain strong in your faith.
God never disappoints and is faithful to those who follow Him. God has welcomed him home with open arms embracing him and smiling on him expressing His gratitude for a "job well done my friend welcome home".
Rest in Peace Good Buddy,
Ron

Mike and I were good buddies during the Loadmaster Reunions. We hung out together
during all events.
He was a very sharp person and will be remembered by the Profesional Loadmaster Assn.
