Background
We created this fundraiser to help cover the remaining costs of funeral services for the beloved, Michael Hugh Toner, 91 years young, formerly of Pawtucket, RI, and recently relocated to be with his family in Littleton, NH. No matter the challenges, we helped this dream come true, yet no amount of time was enough, as he passed away at home on March 31st at about 8:30 p.m. He spent his final moments where he wanted to be while he went out with quiet dignity, a bit of sarcasm,—surrounded by friends and family who loved him, tolerated his jokes, and maybe even inherited his dry sense of humor.
Michael lived a life full of service, from his early enlistment in the Army at 16 to nearly six decades on the road as a truck driver. He was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, community volunteer, kite flyer, and faithful parishioner who gave generously to anyone in need—never asking for much in return.
As if that weren’t enough legacy to manage, he also had four children, seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews—all of whom now have stories to pass down that start with, “You know what Grandpa used to say…”
His generosity extended beyond his family and into the community. Michael donated time, money, and effort to countless causes, including the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen, Individuals on Hospice, St Jude Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and raise awareness with his passion for flying kites and teaching disabled kids to make and fly kites.—though he was never one to brag about it (unless you asked, in which case, he had stories). The President’s Volunteer Service Award now bears his name, though he probably would’ve told you, “It’s just a piece of paper, but it’s nice they noticed.”
He lived a full and generous life, and we want to give him the peaceful, dignified farewell he deserves.
Michael wished to be laid to rest with simplicity and grace, close to family in New Hampshire. While many preparations had been made ahead of time, we’re currently facing a shortfall of about $5,000 due to unexpected challenges with access to his financial resources. This fundraiser will help bridge that gap. 100% of the donations will go directly toward covering the cost of: Funeral home services, Cremation expenses, Transportation, A modest memorial to honor his life, and any remaining administrative costs associated with his passing. Any funds beyond what’s needed will be used to donate in his name to causes he supported, such as veteran organizations, the Autism Society, or local soup kitchens.
We are doing everything we can to fulfill his wishes, while also holding space for grief, love, and celebration. Your support will help ease the financial strain, allowing our family to focus on remembering him with the joy and peace he brought into so many lives.
Whether or not you’re able to contribute, please know your thoughts, prayers, and kind words are deeply appreciated.
Thank you for helping us honor Michael’s legacy—with love, laughter, and the respect he so greatly earned.
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Toner Family
