Michael's obituary

Michael Keith Stull (1953-2024)

Michael K. Stull, born September 13th, 1953, in Jacksonville, FL to the late J Dale and Margaret Mary Stull, passed away in St. Louis, MO on April 25th, 2024 after a courageous fight against ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or “Lou Gehrig's disease”) at the age of 70.

Michael grew up in a military household (his father, GySgt J Dale Stull, USMC), his family moving much throughout his childhood. He lived in Jacksonville, FL, Jacksonville, NC, Oahu, HI, San Diego, CA, and Houston, TX, until his father retired in St. Louis, MO where Michael finished High School.

Michael attended Washington University, attained an associates degree in Fine Arts from St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, and attained a Chancellor's Certificate in Apple Macintosh from University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Michael’s career included working for Mercantile Bank (where he met his wife, Rita), PET (Graphic Designer), Cardinal Brands (Graphic Designer), Grace Church-St. Louis (Security) and Sherwin Williams (Delivery Driver). He was proud to own his own freelance company, MKS Visual Communications, that he began in 1991 and continued to work as long as he was able.

Michael’s greatest joy was being a devoted and adoring husband to Rita Stull and a loving, supportive father to his four children, Hannah, Christina, Eric and Gina Marie. Family was of utmost importance to him. He was a beloved son, brother, son-in-law, brother-in-law and “uncle Michael” to his nieces and nephews. His kind, gentle, patient personality along with his understated, sarcastic sense of humor made it easy for all who met him to love him and feel loved and befriended by him–even if, at first, one might feel intimidated by his appearance with his six-foot frame often wearing a full western getout with a long trench coat, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat that many learned to identify him by. He was a loyal and cherished friend to many longtime friends from work, hockey teams, church, homeschool support group and various artistic communities.

Michael was a big fan of Hockey. In fact, roller hockey became his favorite game since bowling in a league in the late 1970s. He played many years as a goalie and loved watching hockey just as much as playing it (especially watching the St. Louis Blues). His son, Eric, played as well and Mike’s father (J Dale Stull) would come and watch the games they played. Hockey became a valued point of connection for the whole family for years to come.

Michael was an expert with nearly any medium and a canvas but his artistic ability was not limited to charcoal, graphite, paint or clay. He was a craftsman of words, composing beautiful letters, poems and even the beginnings of his own sci-fi novel. He was capable of the finest art but had the most fun helping Rita with illustrations for children’s church and with the more detailed parts of cake decorating and face painting. He taught his children to appreciate and create art as well, championing their individual styles and expressions of creativity from the meticulously detailed to the fantastically ridiculous, all taking after different aspects of his own work.

Michael had an enduring faith in Jesus, as his Lord and Savior. His ability to see the beauty and detail in creation gave him a deep sense of wonder and awe of God. He trusted in the Lord as the ultimate provider for his family and followed the example of Jesus in the way he loved and forgave. Michael knew that his permanent hope and home was with God, in Heaven.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 42 years Rita Ann Stull (nee Salazar); his children Hannah Stull, Christina Stull, Eric Stull and Gina Marie Stull; and his sister Sharon (Bob Olson).

To honor Michael, his family will be hosting a visitation and memorial service on Saturday, May 11th, 2024 at Grace Church-St. Louis (2695 Creve Coeur Mill Rd, Maryland Heights, MO 63043) in the Atrium Chapel. The visitation will begin at 10:30am with the memorial service directly following at 11:00am.
