Michael's obituary
Remembering and celebrating the life of Michael Sklar, 76, a California native who passed away after a brief illness and a long battle with dementia/Alzheimer’s. He was a loving husband, proud father of three children and Zeidie to six grandchildren. His big smile and charming wit are fondly remembered by all of his family and friends. An educator and salesman, Michael was a lover of adventure, boats, animals and travel.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Michael played the trumpet, engaged in creative writing and went surfing any chance he could before he graduated from Montebello High School. He then pursued his writing education in college, graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and studying journalism at the University of Illinois. With his voracious appetite for current events, he returned to the Bay Area and found a fondness for education and coaching basketball. In addition to being an elementary and middle school teacher, he loved leading stop motion filmmaking classes over several summers and spent weekends searching flea markets for antique cameras. He met his wife, Yvonne, his Yvie, while they were both teaching at the same school in San Jose, and they settled there for many years before moving to Thousand Oaks.
Adventuresome and inquisitive by nature, Michael led many family expeditions – fishing, skiing, camping, scuba diving, golfing – and often traveled for his work as a salesman. He owned several boats and felt at home at sea or on the road. He and Yvonne retired to Port Hueneme so they could be close to the ocean where he could walk to see the boats in the harbor and care for their rescue animals.
Michael will be missed by his dearest wife Yvonne as well as his beloved children and grandchildren: son Ari, daughter Remi and her husband Alan, son Justin and his wife Amy and grandchildren Jake, Alex, Anna, James, Holden and Aidan.
