Mike's obituary
Michael L. Rushing died on August 13th, 2025, five days short of his 75th birthday. Mike, a man of few words and many friends, was known for his unbending integrity, sharp mind, persistence, and loyalty.
Mike was born in Terrell, Texas to Cecil and Eunice “Pete” Rushing. An “Army brat”, his early life involved frequent moves to U.S. Army posts in Texas, Virginia, Okinawa, Washington, and New Mexico. When his father transitioned from active to reserve duty, the family settled in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mike received his early education in the Albuquerque public school system. A gifted athlete, he and his partner won the New Mexico State Tennis Doubles championship in 1968 for Sandia High School. He later attended the University of New Mexico.
Mike was a long time resident of Indian Hills. He worked as a control systems engineer and principal at Timberline Electric & Control in Morrison, Colorado for over two decades. Mike was graced with a good mind for technical systems and became the firm’s chief problem solver. His colleagues turned to him for solutions to the most challenging problems.
His marriage of 28 years to Ellen provided many adventures in various motorhomes across the United States with their three children. Travel and exploration was a shared passion, visiting places such as Belize, Hawaii and every corner of New Mexico.
After his retirement, Mike turned his energy to golf, his much beloved grandson Sterling, and his dogs. He was an avid golfer and frequent playing partner with his good friends. He loved spending time with Sterling, his two dogs, and his many Indian Hills friends.
Mike had special and unique relationships with each of his children. He enjoyed spending time golfing, and playing pool and softball with his sons Sean and Ian. His daughter Leah became a frequent companion during his retirement and constant advocate for his care during his last illness.
He is survived by his daughter Leah and her husband James, his twin sons Sean and Ian, his grandson Sterling, his ex-wife Ellen, and his brother Don.
A celebration of life is planned for Foothills Golf Course in Lakewood, Colorado. His ashes will be spread along the river near Belen, New Mexico. You can take the boy out of New Mexico, but not the New Mexican out of the boy.
