Michael's obituary

Michael Purpura, 82, of Dayton, OH, passed away on December 27, 2025 at Ohio's Hospice of Dayton.

Michael was born on October 25, 1943 to Michael F. Purpura and Josephine (Mercurio) Purpura in Harrison, Pennsylvania. After graduating New Kensington High School in 1961, he attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he obtained a BS in Nautical Science. During his time at the academy, he played football, was a Scholastic Star, and a member of the Varsity Club. Following graduation, Michael served in the U.S. Merchant Marines. His sea duty included assignments aboard several vessels: S.S. Independence, American Export Isbrandtsen Lines Inc., S.S. Santa Paula, Grace Lines Inc., S.S. American Archer, S.S. America, S.S. Pioneer Mist, and United States Lines Company Inc. His voyages took him to destinations across the globe: Europe,  the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Asia including serving during the Vietnam War.

He went on to work as a manager and consultant in the software engineering industry spending 25 years as Manager of Software Development & Technical Services at Alcoa.  He then consulted via eTEKware. He retired in 2021. 

He is survived by his children Michael (Heather) Purpura, Stephen (Patti) Purpura, Lisa Purpura, Mark (Matthew) Purpura, Jeffrey Purpura, Dan (Kristen) Purpura,  Beth Ann (Tony) Judy (Purpura), and Andrew (Teagan) Purpura. Grandchildren Ally, Samantha, Alex, Aria, Lila, Claire, Lauren, Madison, and Eloise. Siblings Anthony (Carol) Purpura, Kathleen (Purpura) Galasso, James (Steve) Purpura, and David Purpura. Also other immediate family, nieces, nephews, and numerous extended family.

At his request, cremation will take place and no formal service will be held. Family and friends are invited to remember him privately.
