Michael's obituary

Michael Andrew Miller, Sr. was born to Robert Miller, Sr. and Lois Wilson on September 21, 1948 in his grandmother's house in historic East Towson, Maryland. He attended Carver Elementary School as a segregated school, and then Towsontown Junior High School (now Carver Center for Arts and Technology) and Towson High School after integration. For three years in high school, he was a sports announcer.

Michael volunteered for the US Navy in 1968 and served for two years in Vietnam. He was stationed aboard the USS White Plains, working as a corpsman and journalist, and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal with bronze star device. During this time, all four Miller brothers were in Vietnam in different branches of service. All of them had volunteered, and all of them came home safe--a feat that was written up in a local Baltimore newspaper.

Michael's active service concluded in 1970 and he spent the next four years in the Inactive Navy Reserve. During this time he was an editor for the Black Panthers in DC, pursued an art degree at Morgan State University, and met his future wife.

Michael married Anita Louise Gregg on Christmas Eve, 1971 in Towson.

In 1974, the same month as his first son was born, he was honorably discharged from the US Navy. He later served in the Army Reserves as a journalist.

In his civilian life, Michael worked as a cartographer for the state of Maryland, across the street from where Anita worked. They remembered these times fondly. Michael retired early due to medical issues.

His interests included painting, playing guitar, history (especially that of Towson), and the church. He blended two of these by playing guitar for church services. He was known both for his love of long conversations and his thoughtfulness--such as sending cards to others or asking for years later about people he had met just once or twice.

Michael spent many years attending Mount Zion AME Church in Long Green, MD before making Mount Olive Baptist Church in Towson, MD his spiritual home. He became a record-keeper for Towson's Community Association and a chaplain for the Towson American Legion, Post #22.

Michael passed away on November 17, 2018. As he always said, "I shall not complain. I wasn't supposed to make it off the table after the first aortic aneurysm repair in 2000. Everything after that was a blessing."

He is preceded in death by his wife Anita Miller and his younger brother Paul Miller. He is survived by his sons Michael Miller, Jr., Gregg Miller (wife Eva), and Philip Miller; "adopted" children Kesha Williams and James Holcombe; granddaughter Maya and "adopted" grandchildren Samira, Jawaun, Kendra, Tamira, and Celia; and "adopted" great-grandson Amari; He is also survived by his brothers Robert Miller (wife Edy) and Wayne Miller (wife Sandy), and "adopted" sister Mary Miller. Also left to mourn his passing are his godson Richard Harvey Jr., many beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other "adopted" children and grandchildren, and a multitude of close friends.
