Michael's obituary

Michael Melbye, 81, of Maple Grove, MN, passed away on July 06, 2024.  Michael was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, known for his quiet, kind, generous, and humorous personality.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lois Melbye, whom he married in 1965, and their sons Matt and Eric Melbye. His legacy continues with the bright spark of his cherished granddaughters, Emily and Abby Melbye, and grandsons Peter and Jack Melbye. His daughter-in-laws, Susan and Jennifer Melbye, will remember him fondly. He also leaves behind his brother, Marshall Melbye, and his sister-in-law, Diane Melbye.

Michael's memory will be carried on by his many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Richard Melbye.

Michael was an accomplished scholar, having graduated high school from Hitterdal (MN) High School in 1961, and later earning a B.S. in English with a Minor in History from Moorhead State College in 1965. His thirst for knowledge continued, leading to a Masters in Guidance and Counseling from North Dakota State University in 1973. This academic foundation paved the way for a fulfilling career in education, starting at Pelican Rapids High School in 1965, and concluding at East Grand Forks Senior High School in 1999.

While employed as a guidance counselor in East Grand Forks he served as a board member and president of the NW MN Counselors Assn and as a board member of the ACT Regional Advisory Council. In retirement he moved to the Twin Cities area to be closer to family in 2004. He was also a member of Westwood Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, MN.

Michael had a wide range of interests and hobbies, starting primarily with being a voracious reader. He was an avid fan of mysteries and classic literature, loved listening to music like Jim Croce, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Buddy Holly, The Carpenters, and the Canadian Brass. His favorite sports teams were the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Vikings, University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, and whoever was playing against the Denver Broncos. Michael loved playing golf, racquetball, tennis, billiards, ping pong, Pinochle, and Cribbage.

Michael's favorite vacation spots were Itasca State Park, the Twin Cities, Lake of the Woods, and Arizona, along with visiting family and friends "out West". His life lessons of being respectful and responsible will be carried forward by his children and grandchildren, whom he considered his greatest achievements.

As a final act of generosity, Michael donated his body to the University of Minnesota. A memorial service will be held in his honor on August 9, 2024, 11:00 AM at Westwood Lutheran Church, with a visitation beginning at 10am. The service may be viewed online at westwood.church/watch-funeral. In lieu of gifts or flowers, donations are encouraged to the following organizations that made an impact on Michael’s life: The ELCA Lutheran Disaster Response (https://www.elca.org/Our-Work…) or Park Nicollet Foundation Hospice Care program (https://www.healthpartners.co…)

May his soul rest in peace.
