Mickey's obituary

Michael “Mickey” Scott McGrady, 84, passed away on February 5, 2026, in Groton, Connecticut, surrounded by his family.

Mickey was born on July 22, 1941, in Abilene, Texas, to Harden “Rabbit” and Wanda McGrady. He grew up in Roswell, New Mexico where he became an avid sportsman. He enjoyed many hunting, fishing and camping excursions throughout the southwestern United States with Rabbit. He was a Boy Scout and later an Eagle Scout.

He attended Roswell High School where he met and began dating the love of his life, Trudy Symes. In his senior year he was captain of the swim team and became New Mexico State Swim Champion. After graduating high school, Mickey attended the New Mexico Military Institute and later Texas A&M University. Mickey was a lieutenant colonel and a battalion commander of the Cadet Corps. He was named a Distinguished Military Graduate and commissioned a second lieutenant, United States Air Force.

Mickey and Trudy married in 1964 and he went on to earn his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law.

He entered active duty in the United States Air Force in 1967, serving four years as a military judge advocate, including a one-year tour at Cam Ranh Bay in the Republic of Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.

After leaving the Air Force, Mickey practiced law in Dallas, Texas, before moving to upstate New York in 1975. He continued his legal career there until his retirement in 2004, focusing in his later years on real estate and estate law and serving as attorney for numerous school boards, fire departments, and townships in and around Callicoon, New York.

Mickey and Trudy had 3 daughters that they raised in Hankins, NY, in their home overlooking the Delaware River. Mickey loved the outdoors and shared that love freely with his family, teaching his children and grandchildren to fish, explore, canoe, and swim in the Delaware River.

His grandchildren remember him fondly for his lessons, his practical jokes, his teasing sense of humor.

He was a natural storyteller, devoted teacher of life skills, and a man whose humor, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed.

He especially cherished his home in Hankins, New York, on the Delaware River, where many of the family’s most treasured memories were made.

Mickey was predeceased by his daughter, Maryanne Aluzzo, and by his beloved wife, Trudy. He is survived by his daughters, Alissa Moore and Cassie McGrady as well as his grandchildren, Alexander Smith, Sarah Peregrim, Kristina Smith, Michael Smith, Julia Smith, Laura Smith, Zoe Myers, Bella Aluzzo, and Aliyah Davis, great grandchildren, Melanija Peregrim, Aoife Peregrim, Kayleigh Peregrim, Sonja Peregrim, Finn Smith, Theia Smith, Grady Smith, Augustus Myers, Forrest Myers and Rowan Meyers.

A private Celebration of Life will be held later this year.
