Michael's obituary
Michael Arevalo Mart, born on November 1, 1999, in Vallejo, CA, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2025, in Loma Linda, CA. He was the beloved son of Gina and Neil Mart and brother to Marc Phillip Mart.
Michael was a ray of sunshine in the lives of all those around him - a kind and charming soul who brought joy to those around him. His friends and family would often talk about how he would brighten your day with just his smile. He was caring, compassionate, so easily lovable, and the kind of guy who would give the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it. He was always supportive and wanted to help everyone around him. A truly kind soul. We are incredibly proud of the man Michael grew into.
Michael grew up in Pinole, CA, and graduated from Pinole Valley High School. His childhood and teenage years can best be defined by his loving charm and his gift for bringing people together. He loved to push himself creatively and intellectually. He had a passion for music and excelled as a saxophonist, bassoonist, and vocalist, wielding a powerful voice that would stir deep emotions in you. Music was just one of the ways he expressed himself and forged meaningful connections
In high school, Michael channeled his deep love for his community in ways that left a lasting positive impact. He organized local elementary school outreaches through the high school’s WE Science Club, introducing young students to the wonders of science. His quest for knowledge never ceased and his affinity for engineering led to him captaining PiE robotic competition teams. He was a leader and mentor, holding key positions in many clubs, and inspiring others to be the best version of themselves. It was also during these years that he discovered his passion for math, sparking his journey into furthering his education in economics and statistics.
In May 2022, Michael earned two associate degrees: one in Economics from Contra Costa Community College and another in Math and Science from Los Medanos Community College. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of California, Riverside, taking him on his first journey away from home. During this time, Michael developed his cooking skills, often making some of his favorite Filipino classics like Sinigang. He put what he studied into practice and was successful at building his financial stability. He found his community, with his friends from Riverside, those who he befriended at the local gym, and at Slices And Swirls, a pizzeria that became a cherished part of his life. Though Michael was a few short months from graduating before passing, he had already accomplished so much. We know Michael had a bright and promising future, and wished we could have seen the incredible heights he would have achieved.
Michael had so many dreams and aspirations. In elementary school, he wanted to be a drummer, chef, and astronaut. Michael often looked up to his brother and was inspired by him to pursue math and science interests. He loved working with technology and creating new things. As quite the innovator, he was never shy to think outside of the box. Michael was also recently inspired to build his own Pizzeria with the support of his mentor, the owner of Slices and Swirls, and shared this dream with his family and friends, earning him the nickname “Pizza Mike”.
He ultimately aspired to pursue a career in finance. Michael loved to talk about business, crypto, and his entrepreneurial side. He was eager to enter the world of finance through investment banking. But Michael also never forgot his roots and where he came from. He always wanted to change the world one step at a time and left a heartfelt impact on all of those surrounding him.
Michael often connected with others through discussions of his hobbies, passions, and curiosities. He cherished discussions about his favorite musical artists, cooking, fitness, sports, world affairs, and even philosophy - often while playing some of his favorite video games with friends. Michael had an amazing ability to bring people together and light up any space he was in.
We would like everyone to remember him not for his sudden passing, but for the way he lived - with warmth, kindness, and a spirit that left a lasting impression deep in the hearts of all who knew him.
