Mike and I attended Theodore Roosevelt High School, in Des Moines, Iowa during the 1980's. Mike was the class of 1988, I was the class of 1987. We didn't know each other well in high school, (we ran in different circles, I was a way below average student and Mike was a straight-a student), but we became excellent friends, (through Chris Bell) during the spring/summer of 1989. Flash-forward to the year 2025, and now here we are, with Michael no longer with us. Hanging-out and sitting around listening to Pink Floyd and Bob Marley and the Wailers and Steel Pulse, (and many, many other bands) at the duplex on Shriver that Mike and Carrie's mom was renting at the time, I never, ever would have guessed that not even 36 short years later, Mike would be gone. 36 years seems to have raced-by like a rocket ship at light-speed. When Mike called and texted me about his cancer diagnosis in 2024, I asked him, who's got cancer? (At first, I thought he was talking about his father, but he was recently deceased, so I knew Mike was talking about himself). Mike said, "I have cancer". My mind went blank, and the conversation went blurry, and my thoughts were scattered, from that point. I did not know what to say. What could I say? Fucking cancer!!! Michael has been on my mind every day since he passed, and also in my dreams. I had a cruel, but somewhat comforting dream recently. Mike and I were together and hanging-out like in the old days, and we were laughing, and talking and everything was beautiful and good and we were young, and life is long, but I was asleep, and I knew it was a dream and Mike was dead. (I say it so bluntly, because this is the only way I can wrap my head around Michael's death. I have to feel the emotions, and the feelings of this terrible reality). I asked Mike if he was okay, and he said "yes Steve, I am fine, don't worry about me". And I said, "but you're not here with us anymore", and Mike said "I'm okay". Just then I woke-up with tears in my eyes, and I said out loud, "that's cruel, that was a cruel dream". But I also felt a sense of relief and I felt somewhat comforted, that Michael said he is okay. The dream felt so real, and I know it is/was real. Michael is okay, and he is at peace on the other side, because he told me so during my dream. I am blessed and lucky to have two best friends in my life, Michael David Lovejoy and Christopher Lee Bell. When I told Chris that Mike was deceased, we both were in state of shock and utter disbelief and extremely sad and suddenly grief-stricken. We were both crying and we hugged each other a few times. This is the worst feeling I have ever experienced in my 55+ years of life, and I never, ever want to feel this way again. Mike and I lost touch with each other for about 10 years, but we re-connected about 2010 or so. We talked on the phone on a regular basis and we would talk until the wee hours of the morning, about everything. Michael no longer being here with us hurts. This is extremely painful. This is the type of pain that I would not wish on my worst enemy. This pain is physical and emotional and psychological. The physical pain and emotional grief also comes with an extreme amount of anger. Furious anger. Why?  Why Michael? Why did this happen? I have never felt this kind of pain, (or anger) before. I cannot imagine how Mike's family feels like right now and for all of time. Rest in peace my brother, I will miss you forever.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I met Mike in Des Moines in the mid to late 90s. We played darts together a lot and shared a passion for Pittsburgh Steelers football. He was one of the good ones for sure. He shared a photo of the plaque on his wall from our City Championship recently. Brought back a lot of good memories. Very sorry for your loss. I will miss him for sure.
