Michael's obituary

Michael James Licon

March 24, 1954 - August 9, 2022

Resident of Ben Lomond

Mike was born in Fresno, California. Shortly thereafter, he was adopted by his loving parents, Michael D. and Dorothy M. Licon, joining the family of two sisters, Gloria and Vera, and brother Danny. A few years later, the family moved to San Jose, eventually moving to Ben Lomond, which would be his home for the remainder of his life.

Mike attended San Lorenzo Valley Schools where he excelled in sports. He graduated from San Lorenzo Valley High School in 1972. While attending school, Mike worked at the Ben Lomond Market as a bag boy where he made many friends and acquaintances.

Mike’s next job was working for the Phillip Morris Tobacco Company as a sales representative. He was employed with that company for twelve years where he got the nickname, “Marlboro Mike.” It was during this time that Mike and Erin met, and in 1986, they welcomed their son, Garret, whom they loved and cherished as their only child.

Mike’s next employment was working with United Artists where he sold airtime and created television and radio commercials. With the experience he gained there, Mike went on to become self-employed by starting his own business, Target Enterprises, a sales and advertising agency. Many people will remember him as the “You’re Invited Entertainment Booklet” guy. He sold the books throughout Santa Cruz County for many years.

In his retirement, Mike enjoyed golfing, gardening and landscaping his property, and traveling to visit relatives and friends. He always said, “family is everything.”

Mike is survived by his son, Garret and his partner Jaz of Ben Lomond, sisters Vera Meadows and Maria Licon, brothers Danny and Tony Licon, brother-in-law Larry Hughes, niece and nephews Doug and Don Meadows, David Licon, Darren and Devin Hughes, Denelle Geibel and many other loved family members. Mike is also survived by longtime good friends Erin and Dave Reese, Patsy McPartland, his best friend Earl Ralston, and Don Scharbach, with whom he played softball on the very successful Local Boys Softball Team, which won multiple league championships. Mike is also survived by his beloved Chihuahua, “The P”, who was his constant companion.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gloria Hughes and Nephew, Greg Licon.

A private family Celebration of Life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA of Santa Cruz County.
