This 5 mile hike ended up turning into 12 miles because we got lost, but we were all smiles anyway!

Dear Mirjam and children, Petra, Inge and of course the entire Harper and Sluijter family,
With deep defeat I heard the news of Mike's death. Words are insufficient to express my sympathy. In this unimaginable difficult time, I want to let you know that my thoughts are with you, and that I wish you all the strength and support.
Mike wasn't just a player within our team at the time; he was a rock in the surf, both on and off the field. As a catcher, he not only had the technical skills that are essential for that position, but it was above all his mental strength that made him unique. He understood the game on a deep level and gave us, as a team, the confidence we needed to get through difficult times. His calmness and determination always radiated to us. He always knew how to motivate others, even if things were not. His ability to clearly oversee situations and assist his teammates will forever be an inspiration to us. He taught us another dimension of the "game".
For me, as a coach, it was a privilege to work with Mike. He was an example to many and a friend to everyone. His integrity, discipline and positivity made him the pivot of the team. His contribution to the sport and to our team has worked for a long time and also shaped me in my later coaching career. I am grateful for the time we spent together.
I hope you can find comfort in the memories of who Mike was, not only as a player, but as a husband, father and friend.
With sincere condonces,
Hans Heldens
Former Coach
