They say you don’t choose your family, but if I were given a thousand lifetimes, I would choose you in every single one. Writing this feels impossible because how do you capture a man who was larger than life? You were the true definition of a father, a "jack of all trades" who could fix a broken engine just as easily as you could fix a broken spirit.
Growing up, you gave me the world. You took me everywhere with you, showing me the ropes and teaching me everything I know today. Even when I was a teenager and putting you through absolute hell, you never wavered. You didn’t just talk about loyalty; you lived it. You showed up for me no matter the circumstance, proving that a father’s love isn’t earned—it’s a promise.
Watching you with Mom was my first and greatest lesson in what "real love" looks like. You loved her unconditionally, showing me that soulmates aren’t just found in stories; they are built through devotion and strength.
I’ll never forget your wit, your charm, and that signature orneriness that defined you. Even when your health began to decline and we started that ten-year battle together, you never let the world see you falter. You were a man defined by a work ethic that didn't know the meaning of "quit" and a heart that didn't know the meaning of "limits."
The Fighter: He cheated death so often I joked he had nine lives. I thought you were invincible, and in a way, you were.
The Optimist: No matter the pain or the trial, your answer was always the same: "Just living the dream." To some, that might have sounded like a joke or a bit of his famous sarcasm, but looking back at his life. I realized you actually meant it. You lived the dream, because you built it with your own two hands.
The Hero: You fought until your very last breath with a strength that was nothing short of superhuman and stared down adversity with a smirk.
My Promise to You
A piece of me went with you when you left, and I’ll admit, I feel lost without my "Buddy-Bud" to talk to, but Dad, I want you to rest easy knowing that I heard everything you taught me. I promised you I would continue your legacy, and I meant it. I didn't just witness your strength, I inherited it. I will take care of Mama with the same devotion you showed her. I will carry the Holtz name with the honor, integrity, and hard work that you embodied every single day. The dream continues through me now.
Thank you for the memories. Thank you for the laughs. Thank you for the tears. Thank you for giving me 38 years with you, and thank you for being the absolute legend that you are.
I love and miss you with all my heart and soul.
Until we meet again...
Love always and forever,
Your son,
Joshua "Michael" Holtz
