Mike's obituary
Michael “Mike” John Ecks was born on May 15, 1964, and began his eternal life in Heaven on March 24, 2023. Mike was born in Des Plaines, Illinois to John and Dorothy Ecks. Mike was the eldest of five children. Mike had a love of sports from the very beginning; he grew up playing Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. He received his first surfboard when he was twelve, a hobby that he enjoyed until he passed. In high school, he ran cross country. Mike graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1986. Following his college graduation, Mike moved back to San Diego and began his career. He worked in media, advertisement, and emergency notification systems management both in San Francisco, CA, and San Diego, CA. Mike joins his parents, John and Dorthy; younger brother, James “Jimmy”, and brother-in-law Michael. He is survived by his wife, Susan “Susie”; daughters, Samantha “Sammy” and Summer; sisters, Penny, Elizabeth “Lisa”, and Vicky; aunt, Wanda, and several nieces and nephews. Mike took every opportunity he had to be with and serve the people he loved. When his eldest daughter, Sammy, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, he made it his mission to spread awareness and raise money to fund research for a cure. He served as board president for the San Diego Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a position that he touched many lives through. After his father passed away in 2010, he began donating blood every six weeks and recently surpassed the five-gallon mark. Mike knew that life was short and he lived his to the fullest. He never missed an opportunity to talk to his friends and family. They remember him as loyal and dedicated; to his loved ones, his values, his work, his passions, and his favorite sports teams. He loved watching Padres games and cheering on his alma mater, the Marquette Warriors. Mike was also a huge supporter of his daughters’ college sports teams, the USD Toreros, and Auburn Tigers. Private burial services have been held. A memorial mass and celebration of life reception will be taking place on May 25, 2023 at St. James and Lake San Marcos.
