Michael's obituary

Award-winning journalist and amazing human being Michael "Mike" Dominick Hoover, 59, of Hanover, Pa., died Aug. 22, 2024, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh after a heart attack. The son of the late Michael P. And Marie Alaimo Hoover, he was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Jan. 10 1965. Mike was a graduate of Wyoming Area High School and of Penn State University. He worked as a reporter and editor at the Evening Sun, The York Dispatch, and The York Daily Record, winning a number of PNA awards including a 2001Investigative Reporting First Place, a 2023 Ongoing News Coverage First Place, and a 2009 Spot News First Place, along with accolades for his reporting and work on teen-driver coverage that helped change the state’s laws for young drivers and an investigation of the 1969 York City riots that led to a grand jury reviewing the death of Lillie Belle Allen. He then shifted to working in communications for the state’s auditor general’s office and was a member of the Penn Township Planning Commission. Mike, who loved baseball, was a South Hanover Little League dad, who cheered for his son and teammates, was an Evening Sun Fearless Forecaster, and went on baseball adventures across the country. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, sharing his views and keeping commenters and those in power truthful on social media, and walking with his dog. He loved being a father and being the kind of man who friends could count on for a laugh, a lift, or a strong shoulder of support. He is survived by his sons, Michael T. “Mick” Hoover of West Chester and Alex Hoover of Hanover; his girlfriend, Linda Potter of Hanover; his sister Carole Marie Tompkins of Pittston; three nephews, Donnie, Jeff, and Justin, all of the Pittston area, as well as extended family, friends, and colleagues. In keeping with Mike’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral ceremony but memorial get-togethers will be announced at a later date. To honor Mike, the family suggests donations to Friends of Codorus (www.codorusfriends.org/) York County’s Farmlands Trust (www.farmtrust.org/) or an open space organization or other charity of your choice.
