Michael's obituary
Michael G. Cervantez, 44, passed away on August 23, 2025 in Sonoma, CA after a bravely fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family, the comforting sounds of home and his favorite band, Tool.
Michael aka Mike to so many of his vast network of friends, was born on November 12, 1980 and spent his early childhood in the San Francisco East Bay, attending elementary school in El Cerrito, before moving with his mother and sister to Sonoma, CA in 1991. He attended Sassarini Elementary School and Altimira Middle School before a brief move took them to Novato, CA where he graduated from Sinaloa Middle School. While there, a soccer coach impressed with his speed and endurance on the field encouraged him to go out for the track team, a suggestion that served him well throughout his four years at Sonoma Valley High School where he was an outstanding athlete and MVP on the track & field team, graduating in 1999.
After attending Santa Rosa Junior College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Michael ultimately settled happily in San Francisco where he made his home with the love of his life, Megan Heuer, and welcomed their son Felix in June of 2016. His family was the absolute joy of his life.
A kind-hearted, wise, brilliant yet humble human being, Mike would jump at the opportunity to engage people in meaningful conversation. He was an avid reader, the best listener, a cat lover, and a music aficionado who was rarely without tunes in the background of life. He also enjoyed the great outdoors, time with family and friends, playing his collection of guitars and the keyboard, mixing music, and late-night gaming.
Michael worked mainly in hospitality, and very much enjoyed his many years tending the bar and building friendships at Hop Dogma Brewing Company, owned and operated by his close friend since high school, Dan Littlefield.
A devoted, loving dad, partner, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and loyal friend, Michael was very protective of those close to him, and his wish in those last days was to know that those he loved so fiercely would be ok and taken care of. Terribly missed, but forever in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him, all of those lives he touched are better for having had him in theirs.
Michael is survived by his life partner Megan Heuer and son Felix Heuer-Cervantez of Sonoma, CA, his mother and stepfather Chris and Ed Bell of Sonoma, sister Jackie Yelland (Matt) and their four children of Stoughton, WI, Aunt Laura Van Lue (Don) of Niles, MI, Uncle Scott Page (Joy Chase) of Madison, WI, Uncle Jim Page (Carole Briggs) of Madison, WI, stepbrother Christian Bell (Jennifer) and their two children of Poulsbo, WA, stepsister Sarah Bell (Pio Valenzuela) of Sonoma, cousins Kevin Helliwell of Niles, MI, and Camilla Carlyon (Brian) and their three children of Madison, WI, the Heuer family including Jed Heuer (Stacey) and their two children of Sonoma, Luke Heuer (Deanna Sonni), Eric Heuer (Reena) of Santa Rosa, CA, Michael’s childhood stepfather Alan Gara of TX and the entire, extended Gara/Dutton family who lovingly chose Michael as their own from the time he was a toddler.
A celebration of life will be held on November 15th in Half Moon Bay, CA.
