2011, Southern Oregon

I became the southern Oregon boy scout lodge chief in 2011 because nobody else volunteered. I did not feel qualified at all.

Mike was my advisor for the first half of the year and he saw me for who I was: a scared kid. He did his best to meet me where I was and guide me towards becoming the person he knew I could be.

He never laid out unrealistic expectations or put undue pressure on me. It was only later in the year that I learned he was involved at the national level. Even then, he never intimidated me or made me feel inferior compared to the other youth he worked with. I have memories of him smiling and laughing a lot.

He's helped so many people reach their potential. I feel blessed that he helped me, too. He will be missed.

"It's crazy to think that the 2013 National Scout Jamboree and, more importantly, the Trek program, something that was such a large part of my life since December, has finally come to fruition and passed. I find it funny to think that the word trek is defined as a long, often arduous journey, but with an amazing lead advisor, Mike Bliss, a fantastic committee, and 180 of some of the most exceptional Arrowmen our Order has to offer, this experience was anything but. Altogether, Trek Guides hiked 24,000 miles and educated about 32,000 youth about sustainability, LNT, the importance of wetlands, and above all the mission and purpose of the OA. It is without a doubt going forward Garden Ground Mountain and the individuals I worked with on its slopes and summit will always hold a special place in my life. Again, thanks to you, everyone who helped make this possible, and until we meet again, trek on! " (Nick Dannemiller)

Uncle Mike was such a great guy. Always greeting everyone with a smile. Anytime I saw him he would ask me “how are ya kiddo?! With so much enthusiasm. It would always put a smile on my face anytime he asked. He will be greatly missed.

Mike Bliss was the kind of person whose presence made everything better — a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, and a role model to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His passion for Scouting was unmatched, and his example of volunteerism left an indelible mark on our movement. From our work together at National Scout Jamborees starting in 2005 to his leadership as Sub Camp Chief for Charlie 1 in 2017 — the #1 Sub Camp at that Jamboree — Mike brought excellence, calm, and a deep sense of service to everything he touched. He was a tireless advocate for youth, a proud member of the Order of the Arrow, and a pillar in his local community. I’ll miss his smile, his quiet strength, and his unwavering commitment to doing things right. His life was a testament to how service uplifts others and makes the world better — especially for young people.
