Tony's obituary

Michael Anthony “Tony” Belter passed away on September 21, 2025, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 69. Born on March 12, 1956, in Memphis, Tony remained closely tied to his hometown, as well as his family in Alabama, throughout his life.

Tony was known for his many passions and distinctive sense of humor. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Memphis Tigers, and the Alabama Crimson Tide. An avid Jeopardy aficionado, he could be found most afternoons playing with his pals at his local watering hole. Equally passionate about music, Tony had a deep appreciation for classic rock and music history, often sharing his knowledge with enthusiasm.

He also found delight in life’s simple pleasures, particularly his daily visits to Kroger to explore the Manager’s Specials or a trip to the Junior League’s Repeat Boutique. When not showing off his bargain finds, he could be seen walking his loyal companion, Lila, around High Point Terrace.

Tony found true joy – and his calling in life – in his role as “Chief” a loving and active grandfather to Essie, Hilly, and Ellie James.

Tony is adoringly remembered by his former wife and lifelong best friend, Laurie Kerr; his brothers, Stanley Belter (Tangae), Roger Belter (Donna), Burton Belter (Donna); sister Susan Kelly; daughters, Meg Johnson (Nick) and Anne Sweeney (Travis); son, Jack Belter (Sophie); and his beloved granddaughters: Esther Faye Johnson, Margaret Hillis Johnson, and Elizabeth James Sweeney. He is proceeded in death by his mother Doris Belter and his father Charles (Bud) Belter.

His family is most happy that he was able to see the Tigers beat the Hogs before passing peacefully and reuniting with countless friends and loved ones that went before him.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation at Christ Methodist Church, 4488 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38117, on Friday, September 26, beginning at 12:00 pm, with a memorial service to follow at 1:00 pm

In lieu of flowers, please donate in Tony’s name to Best Friends Animal Society at bestfriends.org.
