Micah's obituary

Micah Avery Stewart-Speight was born December 18, 1996, in Berkeley, California to Kim Stewart and Eric Speight. He grew up surrounded with love by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, extended family, and many friends.

Early on, Micah developed a deep love for Jehovah and his organization. He was eager to participate at congregation meetings. He enjoyed making up games like playing “Book Study” where he conducted and invited his friends to make comments. Many will remember him reciting the lineage of his favorite Bible character, Moses. In fact, when asked to do a report on a historical figure at school, Micah boldly brought his Moses action figure, gifted by a dear family friend, and told his whole class about the account of how Moses led God’s people out of Egypt and parted the Red Sea.

Micah loved sports and spent a lot of time watching games with his special friend and grandfather Walter, affectionately known as “Papa.” Because he knew all the details of hundreds of players, he earned the nickname “The Statistician.” He was an avid basketball player, playing in games all over the Bay Area and beyond with his friends. Despite his natural talent and love for the game, Micah chose to serve Jehovah (Prov. 27:11).

Micah symbolized his dedication to Jehovah by being baptized on December 5, 2009. He reached out and eventually attained his goals of full-time pioneer service and serving as a Ministerial Servant in his congregation for a time. He attended both the 2012 Special Convention in Hong Kong and the 2014 International Convention in Zimbabwe with his mom. He also had the privilege of participating on the program at local regional conventions and circuit assemblies.

Micah took an early interest in travel and photography. He spent his summers with his dad, step-mother and younger brothers and traveled to visit family in Indiana with his grandparents. At 10 years old, he spoke at his great grandmother’s memorial service in Indiana. More recently, he realized his dream to visit Thailand and was making plans to see the Northern Lights in Iceland.

When his grandparents moved to Fairfield, he would often pop by spontaneously and spend time with them. When his beloved Papa became ill, Micah stayed overnight in the hospital room with him for several nights despite a long commute and full-time work schedule. After his Papa died, Micah made it a point to check in on his grandmother, Marilyn, supplying her with cases of water and helping her acclimate to increased use of technology on her devices. As she became more comfortable with Zoom for instance, Micah affectionately said to her “look at you!” to show he was proud of her and noticed her progress.

Besides being a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew and a cousin, Micah was an amazing friend. His closest friends viewed him more as a brother (Prov 17:17). Age was no barrier in his

friendships. Micah bonded with friends years and even decades older and younger than himself. He touched the heart of everyone he met, leaving a lasting impression with his gentle manner and contagious smile.

There has been an overwhelming outpour of support, memories, and stories. Despite the pain his absence leaves behind, Micah was deeply loved by all who came to know him, maybe more than he ever realized. Most of all, he was known and loved by Jehovah God, in whose hands and memory he now rests (1 Cor. 8:3).

Micah was preceded in death by his grandfather Walter Stewart and his great-grandmothers Lee Price and Lily Stewart. He is survived by his mother Kim Stewart, his father Eric Speight (w. Cheri); his brothers Matthias Speight and Carter Speight; his aunts Regina Allen (h. Wayne) and Kathy Chappell (h. Paul); his uncles Darnell Stewart (w. Dana) and Quantez Speight (w. Catherine); his cousins Harrison and Peyton Chappell, Monet Allen, and Corinne Smith (h. Evan), his grandmothers, Marilyn Stewart and Helen Matthews, and a countless number of extended family and close beloved friends.
