Merle's obituary
In loving memory of Merle Solomon.
Merle the daughter of the late Attis Solomon and Phillip Solomon was born May 11, 1945, in
Canaan, Tobago. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Bernard Solomon, June Solomon, and Francis Henry.
Merle passed away peacefully on December 11th, 2025, in Los Angeles, CA.
Merle attended Bishop Anstey High School in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. She immigrated to
Canada in 1968 where she attended Concordia University (formerly Sir George Williams
University) in Montreal Canada. She earned a bachelor’s degree in urban planning. She
remained in Montreal where she was a daycare administrator and teacher. One of her
notable accomplishments was her successful appeal and lobby to maintain funding for the
daycare.
Merle lived a life of service, deeply connected to her family, friends, and community. After
brief stays in Toronto and Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, she made Ottawa her home, where she
spent much of her adult life building lasting friendships through her work and community
involvement. She worked for 15 years as an Accounting Clerk in the Public Service of
Canada and was a dedicated leader in Ottawa’s Caribbean community, serving for several
years as President of the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Ottawa. Widely respected for
her kindness and leadership, Merle had a remarkable ability to connect with people of all
ages and generously mentored younger generations, leaving a lasting impact during the
late 1980s and 1990s.
At the age of 50, Merle embarked on the “second chapter of her life”. She retired from the
civil service and moved to her childhood home: the island of Tobago. There she worked /
volunteered in YTEPP (Youth Training and Employment Partnership Program), an
organization that provided training for young people in Tobago who were undecided about
their career and vocational futures. During her stay in Tobago, she served as the manager
of the Ambulance service where she was in charge of the day-to-day operations.
Merle immigrated to the United States in 2013 and resided in West Palm Beach, Florida in
community with her mother (Attis) and sister (Barbara). She remained in Florida until 2021
when she moved back to Tobago to enjoy the company of extended family. Due to health
concerns Merle returned to the United States in 2023. She resided in Glendale, CA and
then Los Angeles CA until her passing in 2025.
Merle was a warm person who loved easily and was loved by others. She had a quick wit
and loved to laugh. Her bright eyes and engaging smile were the first things one noticed
when meeting her. She loved music, enjoyed parties and family gatherings. She was an
independent (and deep) thinker and often challenged the status quo. She viewed herself
as a “citizen of the world” and was able to adapt to a number of environments even into
her later years.
She had a very inclusive and humane character that accepted people as they were/are. It
was always her intention to first make you feel good even great in yourself and make you
feel included in her sphere. She created an individual space that allowed you to be yourself
in a way sometimes many could not experience with others. In that space her love and
tenderness was always present.
Merle leaves many to cherish and celebrate her legacy: Son - Peter Solomon Marshall, one
Granddaughter -Makenna Merle Bailey Marshall, Siblings- Anne, Barbara, Gale,
Gortlyn, Joy, Marilyn, and Vaughn, Sister in Law- Grace, Nieces – Bernadette, Brianna, and
Brittaney, Nephews –Christopher, Curtis, Deron, Karen, Patrick, Vance Jr, and Vaughncito, host of
cousins including the Trims, the Sebros, the Moores, and Griffiths, and Peter’s sisters –
Kathleen and Lisa. She will also be missed by other extended family members and a
world-wide network of friends.
Merle’s legacy is one of generosity and selflessness. Even in times when she had little, she
gave freely of her time, her resources, and herself always offering whatever was needed to
support others.
