Impromptu Aunty Merle Photo Shoot - Had to be about 9 months pregnant when I took this picture. She looked to beautiful in that blue my 2018 phone failed miserably capturing the brilliance of that day of that Merle. Still mobile and fiercely independent. Our long conversations made the days go by so easy. That time with Aunty Merle Shaped me as a mother and as a person and I am forever grateful for how she handled me during that time. We ate Talenti ice cream in the evenings both indulging each other in our ice cream fetish. Life Advice from Aunty Merle: The secret to life is breathing.

Auntie Merle was vibrant in a way that cannot be taught. She did not just enter a room. She filled it. With laughter. With stories. With personality. With life. And that is why this loss is felt so deeply. The space she occupied was not small and it cannot be replaced. She had a gift for connection. Through her humour, her food, and the way she could turn an ordinary moment into a memory, Auntie Merle made people feel seen and welcome. You always knew when she was around, not because she demanded attention but because joy followed her.
One of my favourite memories is traveling with Auntie Merle and Auntie Lena to Caribana. They agreed to drop me to my friend’s place in Ajax, and even that felt like a big deal. I was riding from Ottawa with two divas who absolutely knew how to lime and I had to hold my own. I played it cool. This was grown folks business, and somehow I was in it. They were looking amazing. This was Merle and Lena, of course. I am pretty sure some hats were involved. The kind of hats that let you know you are in the presence of women who know exactly who they are. We talked the entire way there, laughing and sharing stories. That trip became a turning point for me. It was the moment I realized I was no longer just tagging along. I was part of the conversation, part of the vibe, spending time with my parents’ iconic friends, no longer the kid in the back seat.
That was Auntie Merle. She pulled you in. She made space. She made you feel like you belonged.I loved her stories, her cooking, her sharp humour, and the way she carried herself. She knew how to live fully, how to love loudly, and how to fill a room with laughter, life, and personality. While her absence hurts deeply, her spirit remains with us in our memories and in every room that feels a little quieter without her.
Auntie Merle, thank you for the joy, the lessons, and the unforgettable moments. You are deeply loved and you will always be missed.
Peter, sending you my deepest sympathies and thanks for sharing your mom with me over the years.
