Merle's obituary
Merle Richard Miller, a devoted servant of faith and longtime leader within The Salvation Army, passed away on December 2, 2025, in Troy, Michigan. He was 80 years old.
Born on June 1, 1945, in Youngtown, Ohio, Merle’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his Christian faith and a deep commitment to serving others. In 1966, he entered the Officer School of Training in New York and was commissioned as part of the Messengers of the Faith session in 1968. This marked the beginning of a lifelong ministry that would touch countless lives across the country.
Merle’s first appointment took him to Athol, Massachusetts, where he served as a Salvation Army Corps Officer—a role he would embrace with passion throughout his career. His calling led him westward, where he played a vital role in disaster relief efforts during some of the most challenging times in recent history. He was on the ground during the devastating hill fires in California in 1991 and later during El Niño-related disasters in Mexico. His leadership extended beyond immediate relief; he also helped plant new Salvation Army Corps by purchasing properties to expand the organization’s reach.
Later returning to the East Coast, Merle continued his ministry at Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers (ARCs) in Ohio and Connecticut. In 1998, Merle and his family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he became administrator of the Detroit ARC. Under his guidance, the center expanded to accommodate 300 men and became one of the largest ARCs in the country. With steadfast support from his wife Cheryl, Merle also launched a women’s program in Romulus—an initiative that broadened the center’s impact significantly.
In addition to overseeing rehabilitation services, Merle managed area thrift stores that supported The Salvation Army’s mission. Yet for Merle, it was never about numbers or programs—it was about people. The heart of his ministry remained rooted in Sunday morning chapel services where boys and girls, men and women came to know Jesus Christ as their Savior. That spiritual transformation was always his greatest joy and highest calling.
In retirement Merle found strength and renewal each week worshiping at Woodside Bible Church alongside his family. His love for God and devotion to biblical truth shaped every aspect of his life—from his work to his relationships—and molded him into a man deeply respected by all who knew him.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Cheryl Miller; daughters Molly DeBono (Adam DeBono) and Sarah Dunn (Joseph Dunn); son Adam Miller (Nicole Dodier); grandchildren Aria DeBono, Callie DeBono, Anthony Dunn, and Abigail Miller; and sister Taffie Wallis (Bruce Wallis). He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother.
A life so fully lived leaves behind a legacy not only of service but of faith that inspired transformation in others. May Merle Richard Miller’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and encouragement to all who continue the work he so faithfully began.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."-Matthew 6:33
