Born in Puerto Rico, Meri journeyed to the United States with a heart full of purpose and a mind set on healing. While studying medicine, she not only earned her PhD and MD but also discovered her life’s calling: to care for others not just with science, but with soul. Whether it was a bruised knee, a weary patient, or a struggling student, Meri believed that compassion, knowledge, and faith were the best medicine — and she administered them generously.

Meri was an esteemed associate professor and practitioner at the University of California, where her dedication to both the academic and medical communities touched countless lives. She is survived by her loving husband Daniel Hijad, her three devoted children, and her treasured grandchild, all of whom carry forward her warmth, intelligence, and grace.
