Mengistu's obituary

Mr. Mengistu Assefa was born on June 21, 1962, to his parents, Mr. Assefa Gebrekidan Buta and Mrs. Abebech Geda, in the town of Yirgacheffe within the Sidamo region. Throughout his life, he remained an obedient son to his parents and a deeply loving brother to his two sisters and four brothers.

His educational path began in Yirgacheffe, where he completed Grades I through 6. He continued his studies at Atse Dawit Middle School for Grades 7 and 8, before successfully concluding Grades 9 through 12 at Bale Goba High School.

Driven by his desire to support his family and serve his country, he engaged in various business endeavors and worked for an agricultural development office. Mr. Mengistu was a pillar for his community and was well known as a soccer player for the Yirgacheffe soccer team. Upon reaching adult hood, he wed Mrs. Fikirte Kebede in a Holy Matrimony on January 14, 2001. For the past 25 years, they lived together in love and peace.

While he remained steadfast in his faith serving God with devotion, he obtained a Diversity Visa lottery. In 2004 he moved to the United States with his wife and their two children, Aklasia and Mahfed. They were later blessed with two more children, Yoftahe and Sefanit, making him a loving father to a total of three daughters and one son. He was a compassionate father who was moved to tears by their every sickness or struggle as he tenderly cared for them. He raised his children in the house of God, caring for them like the apple of his eye.

Mr. Mengistu Assefa has served the church since his childhood. He was a Sunday School member at his local Kidhane Mehret Church in Yirgacheffe and eventually served as a member of the church's parish council.

In particular, as a member of the building committee, he diligently labored and toiled extensively for the construction of the Yirgacheffe Kidane Mihret Church. In recognition of his tireless efforts toward the development of the church building and as a testament to his unforgettable contribution, he was honored with a ring and a certificate from the hands of Arch Bishop Abune Bartholomeos on behalf of the church. Furthermore, he served the needy through the charity department.

He expressed his Christian life through truth and action by hosting feasts for the hungry during holidays, clothing the naked, grooming the hair of the destitute, rebuilding homes for those whose houses were destroyed in winter, and providing shelter for the vulnerable. He was a diligent servant who performed unceasing good deeds until the day of his death, leaving an unforgettable legacy among many. Mr. Mengistu also served Misrake Tsehaye Kidus Tekle Haimanot Church as a parish council member. He was a model Christian and a bright member of the DC and surrounding areas diocese, who celebrated seatat and mahlet feasts in unison with priests and deacons. Countless churches will feel the impact of his loss.

Mr. Mengistu was a kind and disciplined God-fearing with an unceasing prayer life. When Mr. Mengistu came to this country to raise his chiIdren, he worked at Reagan National Airport then later at Fairfax Connector. He also faithfully served the citizens of his city through Alexandria City Public Schools until the very day he departed. He was deeply adored by the students and respected by his colleagues.

Mr. Mengistu was a special father who was able to see his children's major milestones. He was blessed to see his eldest daughter graduate college and be wed through Holy Matrimony. He had the joy of sending his second daughter off to college who is currently one semester away from graduating. He also prepared his son to become a college student and was able to see him ordained as a deacon. Lastly, he was able to see his youngest daughter, begin her high school education. Together with his devoted wife, he was a special father who put his children's future above all else.

On Thursday, January 15, 2026 on the feast of the Holy Trinity, Mr. Mengistu Assefa completed his regular morning route and went to Miskaye Hezunane Medhanealem church to present his prayers and praises. Upon returning to his duties, while seated at his workplace, he peacefully departed from this world to enter his promised land. He leaves behind four beautiful children, his beloved wife of 25 years, and a community of loved ones who will cherish his memory forever.
