Melvin's obituary
Melvin “Red” Whitten Sr peacefully passed away in the comfort of his home on March 6, 2022. He was born April 23, 1964, to the late Calvin V. Whitten and Rosa R. Whitten. Melvin was a native of Norfolk, Virginia, and graduated from Granby High School, where he played football and ran track. At a young age, he developed a love for music and took a special interest in being a DJ. He took on the name “DJ Sir Taurus” and enjoyed displaying his craft at all of the block parties with Clyde Clasper.
Over the years Melvin ventured through several jobs. In his early years, He was A truck driver and a mover for MayFlower. He spent many years working for BAE Systems as a paint blaster. Melvin was warm-hearted, laid back, and a true free spirit. He had an intrinsic love for making people laugh, cooking, crabbing, and fishing as well as hosting get-togethers for family and friends.
Melvin accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized as a young adult. In Fall of 2014 he re-dedicated his life to the Lord and developed a great passion for listening to God’s Word and working for the heavenly kingdom. He was a faithful member at Jesus Whitestone Church of Newport News, Virginia. Melvin spent the last 8 years of his life serving in the ministry by using his gifts of cooking, hospitality, and a can-do attitude for God’s Glory.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his sons Melvin L. Britt ( Kathleen) of Arverne NY, Melvin Whitten Jr of Hampton, Va, one daughter Shirley Ulyse (Jeffrey) of Long Island, NY, the mothers of his children, Maria Britt of Norfolk, Va and Sherry Whitten of Newport News, Va, his youngest brother, Eugene Whitten of Norfolk, Va and 1 paternal uncle, Ronald Whitten of Va Beach, Va. Melvin also leaves 14 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a host of extended family, cousins, and friends to carry on his legacy of faith, southern hospitality, humility, and love. He is predeceased by his parents and 2 brothers, Calvin Whitten Jr and Samuel Vass.
As Our Beloved Melvin now rests in eternal glory with the Heavenly Father, Jesus, and saved loved ones that have gone before us, we can be both encouraged and comforted to know this salutation is not Goodbye but See you Later. What a Blessing to know that Melvin is saying, “See you later” as God prepares a mansion for you just like he has prepared one for me.
John 14:2
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Our Family would like to express a heartfelt Thank you for everyone’s condolences, financial support and prayers which has provided strength and peace during this difficult time.
