Kicking off a 40+ career in plumbing, Melvin worked closely with his son, Kirk in the Pontotoc Plumbing Store which started Kirk's career. Melvin was in partnership with Danny Waters.

In 1965 they met he met Carolyn and they wed in April 1966 and have two children, Kirk Kitchens and Amy Shelton.

After retiring in 2014 Melvin spent his time [list of favorite activities].

Melvin was predeceased by his son, Kirk and his parents, Earl and Ollie Kitchens, and brother LC Kitchens. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his daughter, Amy Shelton/Barry, daughter in law, Missy, his grandchildren, Mollie Dean, Addi Shelton, Brandon Shelton, Reid Kitchens/Candace, Gavin Kitchens
