Melvin's obituary
Mr. Melvin Dickerson passed away on Tuesday, July 31st, in Burlington, N.C., after a brief illness.
Melvin was born on September 18, 1949, to Mr. Phillip A. and Mrs. Carolyn H. Dickerson of Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rudolph Antonio Dickerson, and his sister, Mary E. Dickerson.
He attended P.W. Moore Junior and Senior High School in Elizabeth City and later graduated from Orlando College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Paralegal Studies. Melvin earned distinction and was acknowledged as an Attorney of Fact, authorized to present veterans’ claims before the Veterans Administration.
He served in the United States Army, where he was honorably discharged following his retirement. During his military service, he held a special envoy role while on tour in Germany.
Melvin was born with a twin brother, Marvin, who arrived a day later on September 19th. Though born on separate days, the two were inseparable throughout Melvin’s life.
He was an avid fisherman and extremely crafty with his hands, able to take wood and transform it into useful items such as walking canes and crochet needles—skills that showcased both his creativity and practicality.
He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Mrs. Joya B. Tynes, and six grandchildren, all of Suffolk, VA. He is also survived by his brothers: Mr. Phillip A. Dickerson Jr. (Bridgeville, Delaware), Mr. Marvin Dickerson (Burlington, N.C.), Mr. Larry Dickerson (Washington, D.C.), Mr. Michael Dickerson (Hope Mills, N.C.), Mr. Charles E. White (Winchester, VA), and Mr. Will Ames (Burlington, N.C.).
