Melroy's obituary

Melroy “Mel” Pereira went home to Jesus on February 23, 2026, at age 81, in Los Angeles, California.

Mel was born on September 16, 1944, in Byculla, Mumbai, India, to his parents Joseph and Kathleen. He grew up in a loving, faith-filled home—one that shaped his lifelong devotion to God, family, and community. As a child, he delighted in creative projects, playing cricket, and flying kites, early signs of the imagination and joy that would define him throughout his life.

In 1980, Mel met his first wife, Carmen, through family in Mumbai. They married and went on to adopt their two children, Andrea and Michael. Their home was grounded in faith, love, and service. After Carmen’s passing in February 2015, Mel met Allison (and her daughter, Lia), and they married in March 2016.

Mel embodied the roles of son, brother, husband, and father with a generous and steady heart. He showed up for his community in the truest way—first as an active member at American Martyrs in the 1970s, and later as an Usher and Lector at St. Anastasia’s, where he served for more than ten years. His friendships were marked by reliability and kindness, the sort that included 5 a.m. airport rides and a presence that made sure no one ever felt alone.

His creativity was extraordinary. With no formal musical training, he composed both the words and music for an original musical titled "If", inspired by Kipling’s epic poems. He crafted portraits of U.S. presidents on a typewriter, cooked for the people he loved, and filled his home with violin and piano performances. He eagerly hosted anyone he could, sharing food, music, and the joy of being together.

Service guided every part of Mel’s life. He supported charities in both the U.S. and India, giving freely and generously. Professionally, he treated financial planning as a calling. As a Chartered Life Underwriter & Financial Consultant, he cared for his clients as if they were family—because to him, they were. His unwavering faith in God shaped every interaction, every act of generosity, and every relationship he nurtured.

Mel joins his parents, his older brothers Merlin, Ivan, and Lancy, his sister Elaine, and his first wife, Carmen, in Heaven. He is survived by his wife second wife Allison, daughter Andrea, son Michael, stepdaughter Lia, and sister Yvonne.

We mourn the loss of our father, husband, and brother and encourage all who knew him to remember the beauty he brought to this world.

For those who wish to attend, services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2016, at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. (An RSVP would be kindly appreciated for planning purposes.)
