Melissa's obituary

Melissa Somnis, age 49, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026. Born on September 30, 1976, Melissa was welcomed into the world by her mother, Virginia Moore, who preceded her in death and was there to greet her at heavens gates. She was lovingly raised by Virginia and Steven Moore in Worthington, Minnesota, along with her little brother, Josh, where they spent their childhood in a bright pink house.

Melissa graduated from Worthington High School in 1995 and married Jesse Somnis that same year.

In pursuit of building their family, Melissa and Jesse relocated to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were blessed with three children: Corin, born on June 8, 2002; Rylan, bom on February 8, 2005; and Tate, born on July 2, 2012.

Melissa's devotion to her children was the cornerstone of her life, a commitment she demonstrated every day.

Melissa found joy in simple pleasures, such as playing darts with close friends Brandee and Nicole on Thursday nights, cooking, and spending time with her beloved dog at the park. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her

immediate family to the many "fur babies" Corin brought home over the years.

Following her divorce in 2017, Melissa remained committed to co-parenting with Jesse, ensuring their children continued to have a strong family unit. For 17 years, Melissa was a dedicated cook at a local company, where she formed lasting bonds with her employers and colleagues. Known for her generous heart, Melissa was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Described by family and friends as fun-loving, outgoing, and bubbly, Melissa was also admired for her resilience in the face of life's challenges. Her children fondly remember their annual tradition of driving through the falls, sipping hot chocolate, singing Christmas songs, and admiring the lights. Being a mother was Melissa's greatest accomplishment, a role she cherished and excelled in.

During her final days, Melissa's children were her primary motivation, and she fought hard to stay with them. Although she worried about missing out on their lives, her children reassured her that she would forever live on in their hearts and memories.

Melissa is survived by her children, Corin, Rylan, and Tate Somnis, as well as numerous other family members and friends who will deeply miss her. Her memory will be cherished forever.
