Melayna's obituary
Melayna was born on June 15, 1973, in Bryan, TX, to Edgar and Judith (Lowe) Fillmore, as the second of 8 children. She served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome, Italy. Melayna graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University and earned a Masters’ Degree from Arizona State University. Her career as an elementary school speech pathologist began in Los Angeles, then continued in San Diego and Portland, before she moved to Centennial, Colorado where she worked for Cherry Creek Schools for the last 13 years.
Melayna had great enthusiasm for life and people. She was known for her genuine, inclusive smiles and infectious laughter. She had a gift for making others feel important and valued, as if she was everyone's best friend. Her life was devoted to the service of others, usually in personal and individual ways: listening and offering empathy, sending messages of encouragement, bonding with children, giving thoughtful gifts, and calling loved ones. She was easy to talk to and genuinely interested in everyone she met. She also was very dedicated to her faith and diligently served in her church in numerous capacities.
Travel was a favorite activity for Melayna. She loved to plan vacations and experience new places, and she always had an upcoming trip on the horizon. Music was another passion. She was a talented pianist and could sight-read any piece of music. She played with enthusiasm and speed. Her love of Christmas music and the holiday season is well known. She began celebrating in October each year! Melayna was also a gifted speech pathologist. She loved children and poured her heart into helping her "kids" progress and feel loved. She continued to care about and stay connected with many, long after they required speech therapy.
Melayna earned the title of "favorite aunt", unanimously bestowed on her by her many nieces and nephews. She devoted her life to her family and built special connections with each one. She will forever be remembered as the fun aunt who made time for sleepovers, dates, Facetime calls, visits, presents, and late-night games and chats.
Melayna was preceded in death by her nephew, Dexter. She is survived by her parents, Ed and Judy Fillmore, her siblings Mirien and Brian Church, Meredith and Patrick McKinnon, Marliese and Tom Ransom, Monette and Aaron Dahle, Milan and Rachael Fillmore, Mitchell and Erin Fillmore, and Morgan and Ashley Fillmore, and her 31 nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at 9:00am, with a viewing beginning at 8:00am. Services will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 5175 S Picadilly St, Centennial, CO.
