Obituary for Melanie Jones Rubeck
September 6, 1943 – October 10, 2025
Melanie Jones Rubeck, 82, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025. Born on September 6, 1943, in Miami, Florida, she lived a life centered on faith, family, service, and a deep love for children.
She grew up in South Boston, Virginia, where she met her first husband, Byron K. Brown Sr. They shared 19 years of marriage and spent many of those years in Southern California, where Melanie lovingly raised her two children. She later shared another 19 years of partnership with Roger D. Rubeck, to whom she was married until their divorce in 2004.
She worked as a teacher’s assistant for many years in schools across the country and even abroad, a role she cherished because it allowed her to nurture and encourage young minds. Her gentle spirit and compassion touched countless students over the years.
She was a proud member of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy, organizations through which she honored history, heritage, and community—causes she cared deeply about.
Her faith was a steady foundation throughout her life. She was a devoted member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, where she found fellowship, purpose, friends, and comfort.
She is survived by her children, Sherry Lynn Brown and Byron Keith Brown Jr.; her grandchildren, Christopher T. Collins, Jonathon A. Collins, and Jared L. Brown; and her siblings, Elinor Pyles, Anne Wood, and Pamela Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vivian Jones and J. Walter Jones, and her brother, Martin Jones.
A memorial service to honor her life will be held on December 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Fairfield Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Fairfield Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia, in her memory.
She will be remembered for her kindness, her dedication to family, her love of children, and the legacy of care and compassion she leaves behind.
