Background
Meg knew every bird's song, where to find them, and what made them unique! Did you know that she developed a birdwatching program at the school where she worked? She had such a contagious passion for it that even years after she retired, past students would see her in town and thank her for how her teaching enriched their lives and changed the way they saw the world.
And Meg's love for the birds was not a one-sided relationship! Even in the more advanced stages of her disease, Meg still held a relationship with nature. We were all elated when, not long ago, Mom got a once-in-a-lifetime gift from her loyal feathered friends! A sweet chickadee flew right to her finger, perched, and lingered there with her, sharing a morning "hello". What a happy moment for her in the midst of such a turbulent time! She was delighted, and Dad & I were so grateful for the gift!
I remember reading Richard Louv's book, Last Child in the Woods, in which he wrote something like, "You only protect what you love, you only love what you know, and you only know what you are taught." Well, Mom loved, taught, and protected wild birds. She taught anyone who would listen, and she taught it with heart & depth. Conservationists know that the study of birds is one of the truest paths to understanding the ecosystems that support all life on earth. For the sheer joy of it and for the tremendous impact of it alike, Meg studied, observed, taught and supported the cause of the Audubon Society. One way that we can keep part of her alive is to do the same. Please consider making a contribution by donating here. May the loving, knowing, teaching & protecting continue!
