It’s been three years man. Three years of still thinking about you and all the amazing things you had planned to accomplish. You are one of a kind because you left a lasting impression in my life in the short amount of time I knew you. I saw you for the first time in two years just three months before you left us and I am forever grateful for that unexpected chance to talk to you one last time. I love you, brother.
Mauro was my first hire as a store manager at Starbucks. We bonded over being veterans, him in the Navy and me in the Army. I was a medic in the military so we bonded over his medical career path. His smile lit up the room and he made everyone feel like they mattered. He could talk to anyone and everyone and there was no doubt that he was destined for great things. He recently came into my store a few weeks ago and we caught up on everything that has been happening in our lives over the last two years, and it was a blow to my heart to find out this kind and loving soul has left us. I know I may not have known him as long as others but his life has impacted mine in ways unimaginable and I can't think Mauro enough for the joy he brought to my life.
I was Mauro’s 8th grade English Language Arts teacher, Mr. Alvarez.  He was in my advanced class and he had such a great spirit and energy about him. He loved to joke and troll me all the time (see the photobomb he did in one of the pictures I uploaded for example), but he was a really good kid, very smart and very much a people person.  He was also very funny!  Through the years (over Facebook) I’ve witnessed his maturity into a hero, a veteran, a nurse, an active participant in his community and an engaged citizen.  As his former teacher, I was so proud of the man he had become.  His love of community and politics is something you don’t see as often in his generation.  Mauro was so special and his parents and family should be so proud.  I am sad he was taken from us all—he had so much to give to his community and was taking all the steps to get there. May his memory be a blessing.  Que dios los bendiga y cuida a su esposa, padres, hermanos, familia, amigos and a su comunidad. Que DEP.  🙏🏽

Final Day of 8th Grade — with Francisco, Jose, Alvarez and Mauro
I always called Mauro my big little brother. I am a few years older but, he was so much bigger than me. He was the most positive, optimistic and loving man I’ve ever met. I am so honored to have met him and to be his brother in arms. I will never forget that smile or the light he brought into the room. Stay strong and know that we’re all have the best guardian angel watching over us. God bless.
