Maurice's obituary
On June 19, 2024 Maurice H. Garand passed away peacefully at his home in Amesbury MA, surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old.
Maurice was born to Jeremie and Anna (Levesque) Garand on August 22, 1929, in Newburyport MA. After graduating from Newburyport Trade (High) School, he worked as a carpenter, a grocery clerk, and on a factory assembly line before entering the US Army, where he served for two years. Within three months of his honorable discharge in 1953 he married the love of his life, Cecile L. “Nickie” Nicol of Amesbury. Together they began to grow their family, and Maurice began his career with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier in Amesbury MA. When he retired from the Postal Service after thirty-three years, he spent the next twenty-six years volunteering for the local Meals on Wheels program, often delivering meals to people several years his junior. His service was recognized by both the local and Massachusetts governments in 2018. A year later the City of Amesbury further honored him as Senior of the Year.
Maurice was a loving son, brother, husband and father. He was humble but not shy, loyal, compassionate, practical, responsible, hard-working, curious, intelligent and gregarious. He was a musician, a photographer, a home filmmaker, sometimes a videographer, an audio recorder, a gardener and a nature lover. He was quick to smile, and had a sharp wit. He was a living definition of a good man and good person. A great soul has left this mortal plane, and we are all better for having known him.
After sixty-three years of a love-filled marriage, his wife, his ”life”, Cecile passed away in 2016. Maurice leaves behind their eight children: Pierre (Barbara) of Kensington, NH, Paul (Lorie) of Exeter, NH, Andre (D-Terri) of Edinburg NY, Therese (Thomas) Barbour of Madison NH, Bernadette (Thomas) Flanagan of Amesbury MA, Rita (Daniel) Chouinard of Dover NH, Norman of Amesbury MA, and Marie (David) Pelletier of Barrington NH. He also leaves twenty grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and his sisters Anna (Garand) Chetsas of Newburyport MA, and Marie-Therese (Garand) Habbick of Winchester TN, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A public gathering to remember and celebrate Maurice's life will be held July 8, 2024, from 5 pm to 7 pm, at E.V. Jutras & Sons Funeral Home, 118 Friend St., Amesbury MA (978) 388-0430. In his memory please consider making donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul near you, and/or St Jude Children's Research Hospital.
