Maureen's obituary

Maureen Sheila Swanberg (Etscheid), beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many, passed away at the age of 88 on November 6, 2023 at her care home in Kenmore, Wa. She leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.

Maureen was born on April 9, 1935 in Pullman, Illinois to George and Gladys (Stepp) Etscheid. She was the oldest of ten children and held a significant role in the upbringing of her siblings, whom she had a very close relationship with. She deeply loved and cared for her younger brothers and sisters.

On June 14, 1952 Maureen married the love of her life, Raymond (Ray) Swanberg. They moved out west and built a life together in Kirkland, Washington. They began this journey living in “the cabins by the lake” in Juanita, a community in Kirkland. Their first daughter, Susan (Susie) was born in 1953, followed by son Raymond in 1954, and daughter Linda in 1956. Maureen and Ray raised their three children in Kirkland beginning at the “house on the gravel pit road” and later moving to their home on 2nd street.

Together, Maureen and Ray loved spending time with family. They enjoyed hosting gatherings at their home playing pool, music, and dancing in their basement. Family was very important to her and much time was spent together.

Maureen also spent much of her life caring for children; they held a very special place in her heart. She not only raised her three children but also helped raise her siblings, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. Her home was a loving, open door to so many. She was known as the Mighty Mo; she loved so well and was so well-loved. She will forever be in the memories and hearts of all those who knew her.

In her passing, Maureen is reunited with her parents, Gladys and George Etscheid, husband Ray, daughters Susan, & Linda, sisters: Carol, Janet, Beverly, & Karen, and brother Dewayne.

She is survived by her son Raymond Swanberg, her brothers George, Rhein, & Gary Etscheid, sister Patricia Ciabattari, her 9 grandchildren: Matthew, Joe, and Luke Swanberg, Mark, Alex, and Kelsey Walker, Katie Jones, Ryan Eirich, & Kristen Cornell, and 10 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life for Maureen will be held on Sunday April 14, 2024 at noon at the Heritage Hall in Kirkland.  For more information, please see the Events section of this site.
