Maude's obituary

Her Story

Maude Elizabeth Jones of Camden, NJ transitioned peacefully in the arms of her sons on July 9, 2025. Ms. Maude, as she was affectionately known by many, was 86 years old when she was called away from us.  Maude Elizabeth was born in Williamsburg, VA to Virginia L. James and Herbert L. Cooke on December 27, 1938. She was the oldest of five children, Edith James, Janice Hall deceased, Rosella Williams deceased, and Percy Rodgers Jr. (Angie). She was married to Charles Jones for over 50 years, now deceased.

Maude was a proud citizen of Camden, NJ for over seven decades. From Centerville to East Camden, Ms. Maude could be seen counting every brick in Camden while driving her baby blue Cadillac everywhere from the Kroc Center to the Berlin Mart. After forty-five years of diligent work, Maude retired from the Coca-Cola company in 2013.

In her retirement, Maude thrived! She could be spotted on the sunny beaches or bear infested forests of California or popping in on a tutoring session to offer wisdom or food. Both were welcomed. She was a seasoned cruiser who never met a captain or a slot machine that she couldn’t charm. She was always the first to ask if you needed anything. She never met a stranger that didn’t become a fast friend.

She was a beloved mother. Her world started and ended with her family. Because of this, she was a regular adventurer. When not in Camden, you would hear stories about Ms. Maude camping and canoeing in Yosemite, riding a train through Alaska, or shooting arrows at a Native American archery competition. She was an expert negotiator and unofficial queen at the Berlin Mart, and had the ability to sweet talk casino workers into “donating” giveaways before she ever hit the slots.

She was an educator at heart. She took time to mentor each of her grandchildren and stressed the importance of education. Several days of summer vacation were spent going through workbooks, creating craft projects, and making sure that they understood the value of cursive writing. The writers of the Constitution had nothing on the beauty of her penmanship! She was both hypewoman and saleswoman for Tailored Tutoring, always seen with a card (or 50!) in her bag, ready to hand them out to people she met from Canada to Bermuda.

Ms. Maude was an unwavering friend to all. With each group she shared a special bond. Whether it was her classmates and friends from Camden High School, her workout groups, her Zoom classes, or her crew at the Mart, she touched so many people’s lives, and will be dearly missed.

Maude is a member of Victory Baptist Church.  She is survived by her sons, Timothy C. Jones (Lauryn) and Jeffrey H. Jones (Shawn); grandchildren Tiffany Jones, Jeffrey Jones (Julia), Timothy Jones (Sky), Jade Jones (Grayson), and Gabriel Jones; great grandchildren Jeffrey, Julian, and Jayce; and sister and brother, Edith James and Percy Rodgers, respectively. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
